First time post so don't grill me to hard !

FRAM get a good bashing on here and from what I have seen it's warranted - BUT I don't see much referance to the FRAM HP range ?

Are they just as bad ?? or are these race filter OK ?

"helmet, flack jacket on - ready to recieve replies" !!

Now this might have been years ago, but at least then the only difference between the HP and the radioactive orange Frams then was supposedly the can's burst strength; same cardboard internals. I guess on a race track the filters are used up quickly, and their primary worry is that one might explode and spew oil onto the track.

I'm running an aftermarket full-flow setup on my air-cooled. The filter supplied w/ that is a Fram HP1 required because of the pressure the oil pump puts out at coldstart. After I put about 1000 miles on the engine, I cut open that HP1 to see what kind of debris was captured, and found that it did indeed have the same cardboard internals. At this point I'm looking at cross-ref charts for compatibility and have seen that Purolator L39001, KN 3001, or Wix 51515R may also do the job.

Yep...same lame internals as the cheapest orange can. The thing is, I don't know of anyone who has opened a Baldwin or Wix racing filter. They may be rebadged Frams for all I know. I do know that most of the speed shops that I've been to ..and ALL the weekend racers, use or carry Fram.

I've just located the Napa Racing 1515R and will be using that instead of the HP1. Hopefully the ADBV will work better on the Napa than on the HP1. If the ADBV does work, chances are it's not a rebadged Fram. Don't look for me to open up this filter anytime soon and at $11.88+ a pop no sacrificial virgins here.

np - we'll accept the slightly used versions

I never thought I'd see the words " filter" and "sacrificial virgins" in the same paragaph.

The Napa 1515R is probably a Wix 51515R. It's the heavy case version of the standard Wix 51515 "large Ford filter." I believe it's also a less restrictive media with filtration that's not as fine as the standard filter model.

In that size you might also try a Motorcraft FL1A-HP. It's their heavy case "racing filter" and is made by Champion Labs instead of Purolator like the aftermarket replacement Motorcraft filters...

I suspected that it was the Wix 51515R. I called a couple of stores that sold Wix, but they didn't stock the racing line. I was at the Napa store, their catalog didn't have a xref, so I went to the partscounter and asked the guy back there to do a lookup for me - they had the 1515R 'in the back'. Obviously I never heard of the Motorcraft HP equivalent, but if it filters better that's good to know, but the problem would be in locating one. Perhaps a special order on the next go around.

Any of the "racing" filters except the Fram are going to be $10-$15 and order only I imagine. I have a Wix 51515R here I ordered from the local Bumper to Bumper, and the FL1A-HP I ordered from Summit Racing.

Sooner or later I'll get around to cutting them open and take some photos. That's what I bought them for...

jsharp, did you ever cut open that Wix 51515R ?

I'm think of using this on a remote mounted filter for a performance 2 litre engine I have.

Do you know what sort of filtration it has ? Understand it has high flow but concerned it's filtration level might be a bit low ??

Dean, if you're remote mounting it, just use a bigger Wix ..or go for a dual mount. The remote setup kinda opens many options for higher volume applications. Your velocity and DP are cut in half. What kind of pressure are you running?
