Keep Older Engines “Healthy” With the New FRAM High Mileage™ Oil Filter

Exclusive Additive Gel Helps Maintain Oil Quality

DANBURY, Conn., Apr. 15, 2005 – For humans, good nutrition is important to good health throughout life.1 Vehicles, particularly vehicle engines, need good quality parts and maintenance to stay in good condition as well. Aging, however, can create problems that require special treatment2 – for both people and automobiles. To address this issue, experts are increasingly recommending extra vitamin and mineral supplements for older people3, but what is available to help older vehicles?

The FRAM® team is pleased to introduce a unique way to treat motor oil – part of an engine’s “nutrition” – with special oil additives – the team’s automotive version of “vitamin supplements.” The new FRAM High Mileage™ Oil Filter is designed for vehicles with over 75,000 miles and features a time release technology system (TRT™) that slowly dissolves an exclusive gel additive into a vehicle’s oil. As a result, older engines are helped to stay cleaner and to receive more protection between oil changes.

Research shows that nearly 70 percent of vehicles on the road today have over 75,000 miles. As a vehicle ages, the engine gets dirtier at an increasing rate. A dirty engine can contribute to poor performance, with effects such as high oil consumption, increased exhaust emissions, and deterioration of seals and gaskets. The FRAM team, leaders in filtration products for more than 70 years, recognized a significant demand to create an oil filter for these vehicles.

“Because two out of every three vehicles on the road could benefit from this type of filter, we felt it was important to manufacture a product for the aging vehicle population,” said Katina Wall, FRAM Product Manager.

After much research and testing, FRAM engineers developed the FRAM High Mileage Oil Filter, designed to help keep older engines cleaner. As the dirty motor oil passes though the filter’s media, it washes over an exclusive additive gel that slowly dissolves into the oil as you drive using a patent-pending controlled delivery system dubbed TRT™ – Time Release Technology. The treated oil then flows back into the engine to protect against corrosive wear, deposits and viscosity build-up.

“The TRT system is an extraordinary technology that allows the gel additive to dissolve into the oil with every pass through the filter,” said Wall. “This helps maintain oil quality, giving older engines more protection between oil changes.”

Available on store shelves in spring 2005, the FRAM High Mileage™ Oil Filter can fit on 82 percent of all vehicles, including new ones, and can be found in most major automotive stores and discount retail chains such as Advance, Auto Zone and Wal-Mart stores. For being such a big company one would think that they could design a filter that didn't blow holes through the media. Speaking of the media, of the hundred or so I have cut open I would describe it like cardboard that has been sitting out in the rain for a month.

It seems everyone is jumping on the high mileage vehicle bandwagon. Some of the additive companies around the quick lube business are even promoting high mileage fuel system cleaners??!?? I have even seen a product that "converts" regular oil into high mileage.

I don't even have a "high mileage" vehicle and I run one on high mileage oil not because of the label but becasue of the contents.

The filter idea seems a bit hokey. The question is, who is going to cut one of these open and have the Gel analyzed?
