It looks like FRAM has jumped on the reusable air filter bandwagon. Has anybody else heard anything about this? I just got the new issue of Popular Mechanics, where they do a quick little write up on it. Looks like it's the same as a K&N, Holley Powershot, etc. Of course, it is that famous FRAM orange. Hey, at least now we have a choice of red, blue or orange colors for our air filters!

Yeah, I forgot to mention that FRAM hasn't updated their site yet. The only place I've seen it so far is the February issue of Popular Mechanics, and also the Popular Mechanics website under the Auto section (go figure). Haven't seen any mention of when it is going to be available.

Fram is first and foremost a marketing company, so I would expect them to jump on the latest high margin dollar filter fad once the volumes have grown large enough to be interesting.

Just saw them at Pepboys yesterday. The look a whole lot like the K&N. Pricey. They have more shelf space devoted to them than K&N, which is sold at the same store.

I agree with totttalled, I was in Pep Boys today. Picked up a box (not to buy, I just picked it up to look), awful heavy suckers.

I studied a random example today at Pep Boys, too. Like JohnnyO, the first thing that struck me was how stinkin' heavy the thing was.

Basically, it looked like a K&N with an orange media.

FWIW, I didn't see any cleaning instructions on the box or cleaning kits on the shelf like K&N. Brand new, so no one will have a dirty one yet, but you think they'd tell you stuff like that.

i dont see any cleaning instructions. i found a few today at walmart...

it looks thicker than k & n and alot stronger in terms of cage and seal. i wonder though...its not as oily as k & n..i didnt even see any sign of oil in the sealed package...

they dont have it for many cars, at walmart they have it for like 4 cars...

they run about the same price as k & n. i looked at one through the light, the k & n lets in a bit more light while this one not as much...

we have alot here now at pepboys. give it a year and they will have it for every car.

I bought one today for my wife's Grand Am GT. Paid $44.99 for it at Pep Boys. It is much heavier than the Purolator paper filter it replaced. Construction appears quite good.

Everybody relax - the cleaning instructions are inside the box with the filter. There is a plastic Ziploc bag which contains the instructions, along with the requisite(sp) "DO NOT DISCARD" stickers.

The one thing that I do like about the FRAM over the K&N is that the pleats run up-down (more, shorter pleats), whereas the K&N pleats run side-side (fewer, longer pleats). To me, this appears as though it should make the filtering element much stronger. Whether or not it really makes a difference or not is unknown.

>>>I have a Amsoil reusable filter. Can't you use regular motor oil to lube it.

Well, you can, but not a good idea. The AMSOIL Foam Filter oil has a tackfier in it, so the oil stays where it is put. Regular motor oil will react more to the force of gravity, and on the cylindrical filters most of it will be on the bottom after a few days.

The AMSOIL foam oil is also fire resistant and won't support a flame-- not as much a big deal since most cars now have fuel injection.
