Well, when in autozone today, buying some replacment tail light bulbs for my trailer, i took a look at all the cotton filters offered, K&N and AIR HOG. Although they are sealed in clear plastic wrap they were easy to inspect. Held them both up to the light, K&N let a little more light in. Anyway, for $27 at my autozone, i bought the AIR HOG on a whim.
Let me just tell you, when installing this puppy, it sat and sealed (visually) perfectly. Instead of the sides of the pleats being visable, they are covered by a long thick rubber lip that extends down from the seal on the top. After installing it and driving home i did not notice anything odd, it sounded fine. When i gun the car, i THINK it feels a bit zippier but everyone THINKS that when putting a cotton filter in. Fact is i was really happy with the construction quality of the AIR HOG after handling both pieces.
I will track my MPG again, with this filter see if it changes. But, because i drive a 5-speed and its not consistant on shift points and so on, it will be very hard to tell if i gain anything.
Another big selling point with the Air Hog is that the cotton actually changes color when its dirty, and when cleaned and re-oiled it returns to its FRAM ORANGE color, i thought that was pretty cool.
Anyway, it cost a bit less then the K&N and it is visably thicker, and it is of high quality.
My vehicle, an 03' ectoec, in a 03 cavalier, has a 4 screw filter casing setup, that actually squeeze the seals againts the plastic when screwed shut, not that "side-snap" fitting air box alot of cars have, so the seal seating and quality were very important to me, and you could tell right away what was going to sit right, and what wasnt, and this sat perfect, with extra Lip, to cover all possible air leaks.
Its a great filter, and although i probablly lessened my filtering capability by what, 5%? I will live, and i will still change my oil 7.5k with it.
Anyway, i wish someone would test this puppy next to the K&N and the Amsoil Foam.
