FRAM air filters

Hi,

WHats the concensus on fram air filters? The triad fibers seem to be a good idea, and the filters seem to be a generally good quality part, unlike the oil filters which crush easily.
Any opinions on how they filter, particularly compared to OEM and other brand filters?

Although I dont currently use them (K&N instead) I used Fram for years. Fram in both the oil and filter area has gotten a bad name. Apparently someone cracked an oil filter and discovered cardboard ends.. The stories continue to pile up against this brand. Personally I never had a problem

someome said that the red fibers in the fram filter, came off and affected mass air flow sensors. i dont know if it was true. but immediatly when i changed from OEm to fram traid on my 99 villager the idle never was stable once in a while.

i used fram in my accord before my baldwin and i always found dirt in the air box. fram costs alot and i had to change it every 6 months.

i have a baldwin air filter now that is constructred wayy better than fram.

in my opinion there are alot more over the counter filters that are better than fram, quality wise like stp or purolator.

I love the Fram air filters personally. Only 4ppm of silicon in 5k on my wife's last UOA using these filters, and I just put one in my Firebird, so we'll see how it does on there.

With you on that. Did a used oil analysis on the Accord and the same thing, low silicon with the Fram air filters.

So far, no problems on the Fram air filters. Low silicon numbers in the apps I've had them in, and build quality has been fine. Personally, I think they are a good buy.

Don't get me started on oil filters though!

frams oil filters are the best.

i never had a good fram air filter for my 91 accord, i believe this model the seal isnt good. so i use baldwin air filters...nice piece of work.

o fram oil filters arent that good, i was playing

I've used Fram oil and air filters for years,zero problems.I wish they made a air filter for my 2002 Dodge truck,but not as of yet.I use the Fram in the wifes's Jeep,no problems.

Baldwin air filters. Extremely high quality construction. I changed from K&N air filter on all my cars to baldwin.

I just bought a Baldwin air filter for my Jeep Grand Cherokee. "Extremely high quality construction"? Good quality is more like it...at least the one I receieved which is marked "Made in the USA" and it looks EXACTLY like the Purolator. My next UOA will show the filtering capability when looking at the silicon count....hopefully below 10ppm.

what is the shelf life of the fram air filter? I only put 10k miles on the air filter and still looked pretty clean when I switched it for a KN air filter. kn seems to be fine according to analysis, only 2 ppm of silicon with 3k interval. But then again, I don't think our air down here isn't that dirty. I never really had a "black" air filter even after 30k miles of use

it sucks that was true with yours. mine is great construction and quality, though it was made in isreal. didnt look like any other brand...similar to stp but wayy better pleats.

I saw the pics of yours and it looks better constructed then mine. I guess the silicon numbers will matter most. We'll see in 8-10 months. BTW, anyone have a pic of the Napa Gold air filter from Napa?

I have noticed that the Baldwin and the Hastings both say 'Made in Israel.' I think they are probably both the same air filter. I was going to buy a Baldwin when I heard Baldwin filters so well, but the company that used to sell Baldwin Filters in Pueblo changed to Wix. There is a place that sells Hastings air and oil filters. I may get my next air filter from that place, since I think that the Hastings is the same as the Baldwin.

Before spending your time and gas looking for Baldwin and ending up with a filter similar to if not exactly the same as a $6 STP - the both were probably manufactured by the same company.

Go to your local Autozone and check out the STP/Fram filters for your application.

There is a chance (a good one if you drive a Japanese car) that you'll find those high-quality, made in Israel or Korea air filters packaged in the STP/Fram boxes and sold for just a slightly higher price than the "regular" STP/Fram stuff!!!
I kid you not....
The filter I looked at was like $14-15 and the media looked exactly like the one in the picture - which is made in Japan Denso.
The only visible difference was that it had a "made in Israel" stamp instead of "made in Japan".

That was the case with the filters for my early 90's Toyota Camry.
BTW, I borrowed the picture from the "air filter after 10,000km" thread just to make a point.

The store I went to is located in Southern California.

Fram filters, both oil and air, have gotten a bad name.- Fram used to be a quality filter but their quality has slipped. Some say it was when they began to manufacture their products offshore. For example the oil filter endcaps are now made of paper. Not good, especially if you are going to extended intervals.

a long long time ago..my father went 10k intervals with Pennzoil and a fram oil filter...gosh i was too little. now this car recieves no fram...maybe fram is ok in some parts...but really i think there are more out there that are cheaper and a little better quality.

My Volkswagen just doesn't like Fram air filters. for some reason the Fram filters will shrink inside my airbox and lose their seal. This has happened on the last 3 Frams that I've used. I don't know if moisture is drawn into my intake and causing the material to draw up or if the filter element is just cheap. I bought 3 Fram filters from Walmart because they were so inexpensive ($8.39) but I guess it was false economy because I ended up changing every one of them out within 8000 miles of installation. I have never experienced this problem with Mahle (OEM) filters. I am now trying a Purolator to see how it does.
