I have a 2001 Craftsman lawn mower with 17 HP Kohler engine. I have used a Fram PH or XG 3614 and Supertech synthetic 10w30 changed every other year for years. My usage is about 25 hours per year. I use the 3614 series because a taller filter will not fit.

Now, I read that Fram has cheapened all their filters except the megabuck endurance series. Are the PH, TG, and XG 3614 still good enough for a slightly hotter ( air cooled ) and lower oil flow application? The 3/4-16 threaded oil filter stud on the Kohler only has about a 1/4 inch oil passage, so the oil flow should be lower than a car.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The only Frams that actually changed was the Ultra and Titanium. They went from wire backed media to a different non-wire backed media - still high efficiency. Made the Ultra fans need a trauma recovery group, lol. If you want wire backed media, then get the Endurance or similar. If efficiency doesn't matter then any filter should work OK for 50 hours of run time over 2 years.

I find it interesting that you keep taking cheap shots at members here rather that acknowledge that Fram is ripping people off calling this weak paper filter a 20k synthetic …
So, run one 20k - then C&P …

It's true, some Ultra fans were tramatized. So what … if you don't like it any more than don't use it. Simple as that. Stop jumping on me for stating a fact. Go cry to someone else who cares. ;)

Better yet, go sue Fram over it since you think it can't do what they claim.

For my 15.5 HP Kohler Cammand I found the 3614 not fit well. I ended up using a Oil Filter PH8172 for proper fit. Is yours a Command? If so, the oring is not correct on that engine using that filter. Will it work yes but it's not 100% correct size.

There you go again - gotta get personal -
Anyway, waiting for your C&P …

Saying some Ultra fans were traumatized from the media change is "getting personal"? ... lol. It's true, you know the shock, disappointment and trauma is real based on the postings ... it's been going on for what now, like 2 years or so. Yeah, you never get personal, right oh. Go file a lawsuit against Fram. I really don't care what you think about it.

LoL ... be productive and organize a class-action lawsuit against Fram for causing filter buyer trauma. How many years will it take to recover? 😄

I've used various 3614 sized filters on my 2007 Craftsman rider with the 17HP B7S 'Intek' engine for years. I even used some 3600 sized filters that I bought on Rockauto for my old Escort with no problem. They always looked brand new when I cut them open after 1 season of approx. 25 hours use so I started running them 2 seasons...and they still looked good when cut open.

PS: I agree the Fram Ultra was cheapened and I no longer buy them.

I really like the Super Tech MP3614 however
Mine specs what cross-references to a Fram 8712 which is impossible to find or you can use a Kohler (or Deere, etc) filter that they charge $15-20 for. The 3614 has the same thread or gasket but is just taller but in my case, I have plenty of room so it's not an issue for me. $4 filter ? Sold

My Deere LT calls for a AM107423.
Bought those for years for $5-6.00.
Went this year to get a filter, and found they had jumped to $11. and change.
Ended up trying out the Supertech cross from Wally for $4.
Picked up four Fram PH4967's for $1.10 Each from the Meijer blow out over the weekend.
I'm set for awhile.

Yes, some mower manufacturers cram the engine in there and a shorter filter must be used.
However, the OP stated that he has been using the 3614. So, he’s okay with the fit.

That’s a Kawasaki filter and it won’t fit a Kohler or Briggs.

Good Morning OldTom,
The performance specifications, (Eff @micron level and filter life) have remained the same for all of Fram's oil filters. The performance is taking care of your Kohler Engine and at 25 hours of annual use the PH Extra Guard specified on the Fram site to me seems more than adequate for your annual use and will also offer you very good value.
Based on the riding lawnmowers I've seen, the oil filters as usually placed far away from the muffler and are never down stream of the hot air coming off the cylinder cooling fins so you'll be ok.

The Kohler 12 050 01 oil filter cross references to a Fram PH8172 that sells at Fleet Farm for $9.99.
