I have an '87 Jaguar XJ6 that requires oil filters that can be hard to find and/or expensive. So, like many others, I hoard them when I find a deal and buy cases of them when possible. The last few I had were Fram 2995A and the newest batch are the Purolators. Since I've found this site I bothered to look into both types of filters and I found something interesting. The inside of the Purolator filter looks like many other oil filters I've had for my Fords (I usually buy MC filters), and it has the usual perferations spiraling down to the bottom. The Fram has what looks like a plastic sheath inside it that goes all the way down to within a half-inch or so of the dome so I can't see the perforation. I'm thinking this sheath is to redirect the oil flow from the back of the filter to get more consistent flow from the 8 quart sump of this old 4.2L I6...!
I'm curious what this sheath is inside the Fram filter? Is this sheath common? (I have to say that until a few weeks ago when I found this site I've never paid attention before)?
) After noticing this I went over to my dad's a looked through his filter collection and didn't find anything similar. So I just thought I'd ask...! Thanks!
