Having applied for over 375 job postings in the last few months, about a dozen interviews, and one job offer that I declined, earlier this afternoon I came across a job that I think I would like and can perform.

Bear Guard -

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.

The bear guard’s primary goal is to protect the scientists/cultural resources specialists conducting field work to support the Shishmaref Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study. This role is to support the project to allow the field crews to conduct work by providing adequate safety from bears and other wildlife. The bear guard must be able to respond immediately and communicate effectively to ensure safety of all field crews.

Ability to do work that includes hiking in adverse weather conditions for long periods of time, often on irregular and steep terrain. Conditions can frequently be wet, cold, hot, windy, buggy, and/or densely vegetated.

  • Work up to 12-hours a day in the conditions described above for up to seven (7)-consecutive day periods.
  • Completed a bear safety class focused on bear awareness and response within the last five years. Other topics to be addressed include conflict avoidance, recognizing signs of recent wildlife activity, recognizing probably habitat areas, deterrent techniques with wildlife avoidance being the primary goal, and how to respond in the event of a wildlife encounter.
  • Be aware of and understand state and federal regulations of bear watch, hazing, and takes
  • Proven firearm experience including a training class on firearm safety from a nationally recognized safety organization.
  • Able to comply with applicable permit stipulations
  • Has appropriate footwear/clothing (including closed toe shoes), equipment, and shotgun

Good news is, you won’t need a car! The video on Google Maps makes it look treeless-where do thee bears live? Hope they’re not POLAR BEARS!!
I looked at it too, small island. I imagine it is polar bears, that swim there. The island is only 7 miles long.

Population 576 in 2020. Pretty desolate. You are not far from Russia. 45-55F in July, 0f to 8f in Dec/Jan

Typically, bears aren't hit with lethal ammo. If it's a shotgun, it's typically hazing with rubber slugs. I recall the National Park Service prefers clear paintballs.

But here's one in Yosemite.

I'm grabbing my steel toes, a couple Maverick 88 shotguns, and a bunch of 3" slugs. Probably a 10mm on the side, just in case. Otherwise - this sounds fun. What's the pay?

I think that is the issue with this job- the pay.

A 12-hour shift, and other requirements, I think the pay should be about $1k USD per day. I have been to where the helicopter is based out of, and it is a very expensive and crude location. Zero quality of life outside of hunting and fishing, ZERO.

Although I think the pay should be $1k USD per day, I suspect the pay is about $250 USD per day, which is brutal for the actual requirements. Armed "security guards" are some of the lowest paying jobs, and I suspect this is no exception.

Here is what Google gave me:
"The estimated salary range of the Edu., Gov't. & Nonprofit industry where Bear Guard is located is between $69,285 and $90,649, and its average salary is about $79,226."
Yea, I think I'll stay in NC then. But that could be a decent income for an introverted young single guy. And having nothing to spend money on will ensure it piles up quick in the bank account.
