Having applied for over 375 job postings in the last few months, about a dozen interviews, and one job offer that I declined, earlier this afternoon I came across a job that I think I would like and can perform.

The bear guard’s primary goal is to protect the scientists/cultural resources specialists conducting field work to support the Shishmaref Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study. This role is to support the project to allow the field crews to conduct work by providing adequate safety from bears and other wildlife. The bear guard must be able to respond immediately and communicate effectively to ensure safety of all field crews.
Ability to do work that includes hiking in adverse weather conditions for long periods of time, often on irregular and steep terrain. Conditions can frequently be wet, cold, hot, windy, buggy, and/or densely vegetated.

The bear guard must be able to respond immediately and communicate effectively to ensure safety of all field crews.

- Work up to 12-hours a day in the conditions described above for up to seven (7)-consecutive day periods.
- Completed a bear safety class focused on bear awareness and response within the last five years. Other topics to be addressed include conflict avoidance, recognizing signs of recent wildlife activity, recognizing probably habitat areas, deterrent techniques with wildlife avoidance being the primary goal, and how to respond in the event of a wildlife encounter.
- Be aware of and understand state and federal regulations of bear watch, hazing, and takes
- Proven firearm experience including a training class on firearm safety from a nationally recognized safety organization.
- Able to comply with applicable permit stipulations
- Has appropriate footwear/clothing (including closed toe shoes), equipment, and shotgun
