My Son just picked up some 5w30 Formula Shell 5 qt. container for $9.88...Im sure its good oil but how does it compare to say Pennzoil Yellow Bottle?

I believe it's just as good as PYB. Too bad the surrounding Home Depots near me have it in stock; and I am not driving halfway into Ohio to find it

Works just fine. Was a favorite name brand inexpensive oil when on sale for many of us at Menards before they recently switched to Valvoline.

IIRC Home Depot is advertising it around here for that price in their flier. It's a good oil, I used it for about 2 years in an Aerostar.

Formula Shell is a very solid conventional oil. Even at the regular price of around $13 it's a very good buy. Similar to Havoline in performance.

Any conventional engine oil from big oil companies are good for reasonable OCI. Big oil companies(Shell, Exxon/Mobil, Chevron, BP ...) have a ton of money and they spend good amount in R&D, their products are all good.

The only oils I avoid are no-name and/or house brands ... Oil is usually on sale at 1 of the chains or can be purchased fairly low price at WM, why take a chance to save few bucks a year ?

Based on the 2014 testing of 5w-20 grade oils, the FS specs out lower on most items vs. the PYB: higher Noack, lower TBN, less Calcium, less Moly, more resistance to cold flow starts. The only thing that appears better is the higher levels of Boron. The Noack numbers are quite a bit different. I'd choose the PYB, even if it cost $5 more per jug.

Fwiw I used the 5w-20 Formula Shell synthetic for 4 OCI's....before I discovered better and cheaper synthetic oils available via rebates during the year. Only thing I noticed was that consumption of >1 qt per OCI was higher than I liked for FS syn. On PP 5w30 it's now down near zero.

In fairness to Formula Shell, we're comparing what might have been a bit of a ringer in the PYB and even the QSGB to which it was compared. The latter two showed a lot "better" than their own data sheets indicate, particularly with Noack, and therefore there's no guarantee as to what we'll see down the road. Now, do we see such things happen with Formula Shell on occasion, or do they offer more stability? I have seen PQIA testing before that would show the three products to be identical, within the error bars, of course, giving a lot of credit to a VOA which it really cannot do, and, assuming I didn't believe Shell when they say they are different products, and I do believe them.

I believe Formula Shell is very good conventional motor oil. I have used FS, QSGB, and PYB ... I have just as much confidence running FS as I do QSGB and PYB. I don't believe you can go wrong with any of these. And $9.88 for a 5-quart jug of FS is a good buy.

I don't see why not. I bought a jug of the 5W30 for my snowblower. Great price.
