As I'm sitting here drinking some amazingly delicious craft beers and getting drunk (forget about it) I started thinking. Everywhere you look, it's Bad News Bears. The media keeps trying to sell us on this economic nuclear winter meltdown. Doom and gloom. Is it true or not? Honestly I don't know. I don't work on Wall Street or at the Bank of America, so who am I to call it?

Irregardless of all this media garbage I have to say that you really have to give it up for the positive things.......

1. My stomach is full and so is my cupboard and refrigerator
2. I have a fine looking girlfriend that I reside with and she is keeping my bed warm and cozy at the moment so when I crawl in at 4 am it will be better than having an electric blanket
3. My job pays the bills and allows for a few minor extras, I live comfortably but not excessively
4. I live in an age where information is fast and free flowing. Anything I want to learn about is a few finger-strokes away. All my parents had was rabbit ears and a land line telephone. Quite a world of difference in 30 years.
5. The old political order is out of business and the new order brings hopes of change.
6. Beer. BEER! "Beer is proof that God wants us to be happy" Not just [censored] watery yellow beer, these days the amount of craft brew is staggering, more choices than ever before.

etc, etc, etc I could go on forever. The bottom line is this: I live in a warm building with a cozy bed and lots of food. My health is good. The health of my loved ones is good. I have the leisure time to get drunk and listen to whatever song I want to hear on the internet. My car runs perfectly and I'm still gainfully employed. By no means am I rich but life is JUST FINE. No complaints here, sometimes you have to step back from the BAD NEWS and reflect on the things in life that really aren't so bad.

Good luck and goodnight.

I was about to tell you that "irregardless" isn't a word, but you know what? Forget about it!

Good post. I'm currently unemployed but for the most part feel the same as you do.

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. If this weren't so then why is the finest beer in the world brewed by monks?

"Money can't buy life..."- Bob Marley

I don't know if I quoted that exactly but those were his words.

"Nonstandard" means ghetto English.

With more people using improper words, those improper words become eventually mainstream words. It's too bad, really.

I understand that, but the link dates 'irregardless' to pre WWI era. Not exactly a new slang word. English is constantly evolving, keep up with the language or become a relic. I'm about to become a member.

Some changes represent devolution rather than evolution. Anybody who knows the root word and the etymology of "regardless" knows that "irregardless" is nonsense. Accepting such an unword (questionable in itself!) as a proper word does not represent a positive change, because this acceptance would be based on ignorance regarding word meaning. At least that's how I see it.

I have no problem with the creation of new words, for example the verb "to google," as long as they make sense. As far as "irregardless" goes, I really don't understand how that ever caught on, but it's been around, as you have pointed out, for a long time. Because it's a nonsensical word, I truly hope it does not become an accepted mainstream word. We already got a perfectly good, proper word, which is also shorter!

What are you doing, Dave?

"Usage Note: Irregardless is a word that many mistakenly believe to be correct usage in formal style, when in fact it is used chiefly in nonstandard speech or casual writing. Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so."

Now that's funny!

Good God man, why are you waiting until 4am...?

In that particular case I believe it may be wiser to say, "Honey, I have been deboning the chicken while you were gone" rather than proclaiming proudly, "Honey, I've been boning the chicken while you were gone."

Mori is way more funnier (!) than HAL. Only he would think of boning a chicken at this time of night. Or morning.

As for the topic at hand, it's hype that got us in this mess, we will need to use hype to get out.

OTOH somebody thinks the reasons FDR's experiments didn't work is he didn't spend enough money, they weren't large or aggressive enough. We are for sure doomed if you let that garbage get to you. Clown will eat you.

As has been said before, happiness is not having what will make you content, but being content with what you have. It sounds silly at first, but it makes more sense to me all the time.

all the OP's observations are fine and dandy, but selfish. not to pick, but that's how most things are w/ people; "well, it doesn't affect me, so who cares?"
I also think I've got it pretty good, but outside forces have made things more difficult. property taxes are higher, food costs are higher, insurance has gone up as well, so I HAVE to be concerned about what's going on in the world beyond my picket fence.
irregardlessly, however, there ARE more, important, things, like, i.e., punctuation and grammar checking randomlessonly.

But with news available even in the cracks in the cement 24/7, it's harder to get away from it all. And sit back to appreciate that in spite of it all, most of us still have it pretty good.
