As far as I know it looks like it's going to happen. GM has a website for the car:

http://www.chevroletcapriceppv.com/#home

Car and Driver seem to think it's coming too

Here is Ford's Website for the new PI and a C/D write-up:

The mustang gets the 5.0L, the PI gets the new engines, and I'm fairly sure the new explorer gets the same 3.5L/3.7L and ecoboost engines. Bit sad.

Wow...I hadn't thought of that. It is sad. I didn't like the 4.6 when they first announced it, just ignorant 5.0 love I guess. But yeah, after owning a number of them, I will miss the 4.6 as well, it had a good run.

Thanks for the links, looks like they are still working on the Ford PI site.

Article says it's a Statesman...with no plans for retail sales. I dont get that.

No, I just made this assumption based on the article which only states that an SUV based PI will be out later. I would think this would be a 2WD Expedition to compete with the Tahoe (which are becoming very popular with the OPP in this area).

Oh, and I just read the C/D test for the Tarus SHO, they got 16 MPG avg with the Eco Boost engine!

Hello LS2JSTS!. To answer your question, yes the new Caprice (based on the holden) will be coming to the US.

No retail plans. Just police use only. My wife works for the local police dept and is in charge if the police vehicles (buying and maintaining them). She has a brochure/press release for the new Caprice. Right now, it seems a no-go because the cars were introduced with a center console. That's a major minus for police officers due less room and no place for computers and equipment. However, just recently GM announced they will offer the car w/o the center console just for those reasons. My wife's police dept won't be buying any due to costs and they are shying away from V8's. The have 2 V8 Dodge Chargers and the rest are V6. The favorite car of the force?? The Crown Vics. The officers love them and are loyal to them. Of the four cars used (Tahoe, Impala, Charger and CV) - everybody prefers the 'Vics. The worst is the Impala (pos), then the Charger (due to poor visibilty).

Probably because thats where the current CVPI is sitting in the performance ranks. The CVPI is a slug. According to the Michigan State Police (who, along with the LA County Sherrif, are the de facto police vehicle testers), the V8 CVPI, Impala (V6), and Charger V6 all provide 0-60 acceleration times within .5 second of each other, in the 9 second range. It's not like the V8 CVPI was handily beating up it's V6 competitors. The Charger V8 is the exception, with sub-6 second 0-60 times.

MSP's reccomendation is that most local police forces would be best served by the CVPI, Impala, or Charger V6 and the Charger V8 would be best served in a highway interceptor role, suce as that of a State Police.

Why is GM bringing a V8 to the party again? Well, all the local depts around me have pretty much switched to the Charger V8 exclusivly. That is just an observation and in no way implies that all law enforcement are going that direction. Actually, I would like to see the adoption rate of the V6 vs. V8 in the Charger. I'm sure GM will keep the Impala around, giveing competition to the new Ford PI and Charger V6.

isn't that 3.5L the Eco-Boost with 365 HP and 395 torque? It's supposed to have MPGs of a v6.
and probably because it makes that much hp and torque without having a 6L or a 5.7L (idk how much hp and tq those make though-probably not much more)

Not quite. The 3.5L Duratec is 263HP, which is the standard option engine. The higher end model gets the 3.7L Ecoboost which makes 365HP/350lb/ft I believe.

The CVPI 4.6L is 260HP. So the smaller V6 at least matches the old V8 in terms of HP, and probably torque too.

If you read Car and Drivers test article on the SHO with the ECO boost, you'll see it is very quick, but it is also very thirsty. They averaged 16 MPG, and called it "anything but Eco". 16 MPG is probably right at where a 6.0L GM V8 or a 5.7L Hemi Mopar would probably get, and they don't have the added complexity of a turbo.

The CVPI is rated at 250 HP, not 260.

I think it would be nice if Chevy offered 2 versions. The V8 and a direct injected 3.6 V6. The V6 would have decent fuel economy while pushing 300hp. But even better - we'd all finally be able to see if DI really has carbon issues!

The new car even comes with "stab plates" to protect the driver and front-seat passenger. Police departments can order optional ballistic door panels.

Both were already available on the CVPI.

They plan to. A V8 and a V6.

Police-package Caprices will be motivated by either a V-6 or V-8. A 355-hp, 6.0-liter V-8 will be launched first, followed by a 3.6-liter V-6 the following year.

The death of the 4.6 Modular, but the 5.0L Modular (the Coyote is a revamped bored and stroked 4.6) lives on in Mustang and F150. This is good.

And of course brings back the iconic "5.0" of which I'm sure there will be many badges

I don't understand why people call it 'thirsty', when it gets better fuel economy than most cars out there. The Caprice has been sold in Australia and the Middle East for a long time, and it doesn't exactly shine in the fuel economy department as much as it does in performance.

Ford basically handed down the police car market to GM on a golden plate with this thing.

I am afraid FalconLS is correct...Once the console issue is changed for law enforcement I think it will be a big seller...South Florida seems to want only V8 engines and rear wheel drive cars...Since a lot of agencies down here keep their cars for up to 6 years or longer they seem to be willing to pay a little more to get the RWD V8 cars.

BTW the 4.6 in not thirsty at all...Why this ignorant comment keeps coming up all the time baffles me.

I plan on getting a 2011 CVPI in 2012 or 2013 and keeping it forever.

It may not be thirsty, but I can about garuntee you that the 3.5L with the same HP rating will be even less so. People are just afraid of what is new, the Crown vic is going out of production, it would be uneconomical to keep the plant open simply to make police cars. And I've talked to several police officers, who say they wish someone (now GM and Ford) would make a custom built police car, and GM and Ford have answered. The Ford PI with the Ecoboost will likely have acceleration on par if not exceeding the GM 6.0L
