I did a quick search and didn't see any discussions on the Ford v10 gas engine. What are people running for oil, OCI's and the like?

I'm running Schaeffer's 5W20 7000 semi-synthetic and I'm really happy with it so far. My truck's computer is suggesting 8,000 mile OIC, which I've confirmed with a Blackstone UOA.

The 6.8L will run 300k+ on any SM/SN 5w20 out there.. It's a mighty tough engine. I don't have a 6.8L, but in my car, I use RP 5w20 and it works well.

My brother has one and is running 5K intervals, but he is probably doing a lot of that with severe service by towing with it. He's running Motorcraft oil and, against my advice, cheap filters. It's holding up well.

Guess I should have stated I'm running Motorcraft oil filters and a 6k mile OCI. I just can't bring myself to go farther on the oil. I'm planning another UOA with my next change, and I'll post the results.

You already have a good combination. Get yourself some UOA kits from Schaeffers (they are very reasonably priced), and see what they recommend.

The engine isn't fussy about oil, I change mine once per year with whatever I have hanging around the shop. 5w30 or 10w30 usually, but I have some 5w20 that is looking good for this coming winter.

Keep an eye on the exhaust manifold studs...they love to break.

Since you have already gone to the time and expense of determining through UOA that your current regimen is "confirmed" as working, why not just compromise between your self-imposed 6K and the Blackstone recommended 8K and...

Just change your oil and filter every 7K and see how many decades it takes for you to wear out your truck?

Cheers!

p.s. This from a guy with a 25 year-old 460 (with a carb, no less!) that is still running pretty strong on Good Ol' 10w30.

p.p.s. Personally I'd be more concerned about the transmission than the engine (they don't make 'em like the C6 anymore, IMHO).

Part of the reason why I do 6k oil changes is so I have a buffer. My schedule can get crazy, so it is nice knowing I have a buffer in case my schedule gets too full. Plus, I just enjoy changing my oil.

I'm definitely changing the transmission fluid more often than recommended. Everyone has their own secrets, but it seems like the guys with high-mileage V10s and transmissions (say 200,000+ miles) change their fluids more often than the owners manual recomends.

The transmission fluid in the 4R100 in a Superduty should go NO MORE than 30k if the truck is worked and not a mall queen. The 4R100 Could use another MASSIVE cooler. Some just use the factory 6.0 coolers. Don't forget your diffs, T-case??,power steering fluid drain/refill,brake bleed, coolant as well.

It is my experience that the truck will probably rust out before the engine gives out.

I've used 5w-40, 5w30, 10w30, and 5w-20 over 100k miles. I stick to 5w30. I hardly ever use it except during the worst days of winter and give it a bit of exercise now and then, so I probably change oil every year and a half to two years.

It's a great truck and I love it to death, but 10mpg doesn't cut it nowadays. I knew it was a gas hog and that prices would go up, but $100 fill ups suck greatly.

The new Prius C works great as a daily driver. 50mpg.
