My girlfriend's mother is driving back up to Ohio in a couple of weeks and has asked me to take a look and check out her car before the trip. It's a 2 day trip, over 1000 miles.

She has a 2001 Ford Crown Vic, has about 100,000 miles on it now. Is there anything special to look out for or check or replace on a Crown Vic at that mileage? I drive a Dodge pickup, my gf has a Honda Accord and I admit I am unfamiliar with Ford cars. I do know the oil was just changed recently, Napa conventional 5W20 and a Proselect filter, and just last summer the fuel pump was replaced.

I know I can check the belts, hoses, air filter, check the battery voltage and look at the brake pads and shoes, all the basic stuff is pretty much universal but is there anything else Ford-wise to look out for?

Thanks for any help.

100K...Plugs I'd also service the trans unless it's been done recently. Other then that there nothing special about the CV to look at

I think you have the basic items well covered!

Thanks for the help, the car does seem to be in very good shape. My gf's dad passed away about 6 weeks ago and I am trying to help her out any way I can. He took good care of their car though and I think the plugs have been changed already. I can pull a couple and check anyway. He may have had the transmission serviced too, I'll check the condition and level of the fluid and have a good look under the car for any leaks.

I will have to check the glove box for repair and maintenance receipts, I doubt my gf or her mother know much about what has been done to the car, other than the fuel pump. It was a fiasco because it failed on the highway here in Florida and they had it towed to a Ford dealer who charged $1100.00 to replace it. They were going to charge $1300.00 but offered a "senior discount". I remember checking the price of the fuel pump on the Napa website and it was about $300.00, so that is either a very labor-intensive job or the dealer just ripped them off.

Thanks for the help here.

yep, check the diff fluid too. CV's normally don't have a drain plug, but there is a filler port. I would at least check the level and condition of the fluid. Our Police units we dump and fill every 60K and the fluid is in good shape even after the abuse those cars see.

Condolences also on your G/F's Dad.

Thanks for the info and the well-wishes. It has been hard on my gf's mother, she and her husband were married 59 years and had seven children. He was a really good man too, he worked hard all his life in the Uniroyal Tire and Rubber factory in Ohio. He always put his family first and did the very best he could for them. It has been tough for my gf too, she is the youngest of the seven kids. My gf and I both do as much as we can to help her mom.

Thanks again. It doesn't sound like the car will be that big of a deal to check it over.

+1

I kept my original plugs in my 99 4.6 Mercury for 200K miles...I will say the original ones should be good for 150K miles at least...I have almost 90K miles on my 05 Crown Vic now and planning a long trip soon and I am not changing my plugs anytime soon.

Check your fluids - the battery also.
Maybe a peek at the brake pads.
Tire pressure for sure - use the rating on the door [maybe plus 3-4 lbs for highway], NOT what's printed on the tire!

Only thing i can add is check the air filter, and maybe change the fuel filter. Make sure the spare tire and jack are ready just in case it is needed. I would also like to offer my condolence's to your g'f on the loss of her father. The panther chassis is pretty reliable.

The 1998-2003 CVPIs used to eat ball joints and tierod ends, at least in the PD I worked for. Not sure about civilian models. I would certainly check those. Usually the driver would know it as the vehicle would make awful sounds when taking tight turns.

CAREFUL on the plugs if that is a 4.6 or 5.4 L engine. Aluminum heads that only have about 3-4 threads on them. Make sure the engine is at room temperature. DO NOT replace or thread if block is hot. They can easily be over-torqued and stripped out. Big problem for F150 owners and then having them spit out the spark plugs. Check the brake pads up front.

More people have walked on the moon than those who check their spare tire pressure.
And on an old VW Beetle, this is even more important, as the spare tire powers the window washers!

Apparently, whomever last replaced the plugs in my Crown Vic before I did was afraid of that because every single one of them was loose. Either that or they just plain forgot to torque them down.
