I purchased a 2005 Focus from a neighboor, for 500 bucks, 60k miles, body in good condition, and good interior.

The car has a bad clutch, needs a set of tires, and a battery. I am planning on doing the clutch myself, I purchased a Haynes manual for the car and the job seems pretty easy.

Any tips are welcome.

I do not know what transmission it has, I beleive it has the 2.0l.

Tires: Riken Raptor HR about $40/ea (for size 185/65-14) + tax + shipping from onlinetires.com. Installation at Walmart for about $15-16/ea with lifetime balance + rotation.

Battery: Everstart Maxx at Walmart

Why would you put Raptors on your car? Good grief, get some real tires.

As for Everstart Maxx batteries, I've head three die on me in different cars over the course of a year. So no thanks on those as well.

Clutch kit from a local source, not mail order of any kind. You might pay a bit more, but you'll be able to get help/return if needed much easier. If this is your first clutch repair, have someone help you who has done it before.

Battery from Autozone, Duralast Gold made by Johnson Controls.

Get some Kumho Solus KR21 or Pirelli P4 tires online from treadepot.com or locally from Discount tire.

Haynes Manuals are not very good and are better left on the shelf alongside the Chilton & Bentley. Helm publishes The ford factory manuals and is by far better. Some of these manuals have inaccurate information & incorrect specifications. You will find they generalize in areas that require specific information. An active Ford Focus forum may be your best friend for data and file sharing.

That's a steal. I'd put on decent tires, the best battery you can find, and even if you jobbed out the clutch for 2500 bucks you have a car worth twice that.

That car has a bad clutch in 60K?
Check out the linkage, and master and slave cylinders first.
It sounds like you got a super deal, even if you sink some more money in it.
BTW, dump the ATF in the transmission and use Redline MTl , Amsoil MTF, or Pennzoil Synchromesh in it.

Very good deal, its why I jumped on it. I plan on tossing a clutch kit from napa 250 bucks in it. As far as the clutch goes it looks like a pain but doable, I'll need to remove the front axels, disconnect the driver engine monunt, remove the starter, shifter linkage, fluid line, drain the fluid, support the engine with a jack, drop the trans, change the clutch, get the flywheel machined, and toss it all back together. Good thing I got high lift SUV jack stands, I'll buy a second pair and get the car as high in the air as I can possibly get it.

As far as the clutch I read on some focus forums that clutches in these early focus' (foci?) go bad quite often. I also read that the flywheel is dual mass and cannot be machined, I am hoping it is machineable.

Thanks for the recomendations.

Quick question, I use Amsoil synchromesh in my pickup, will this be compatable with this trans?

Depending on how good the brakes are I may just do a quick front brake job and just sand the rotors depending on how good they are. I am hoping I can charge the battery and get it running.

I am also going to do a tune-up toss some Autolite plats in it, NAPA plug wires, change the coolant too. I do not know what kind of coolant it has but I am assuming the factory calls for G-05, if so I will put Zerex in it that is available at my local NAPA.

It is nice to have a project car, I am kind of looking forward to it. I already picked up a Super Tech filter and will use some of the Chevron 5-30 I have on hand. I have done clutches on rear wheel drive trucks and my Jeep before, but never on a fwd econobox.

Also it is a 01 not a 05, little typo in the first post, still 500 is a steal, KBB on it is 4500, and the way cars sell in So. Cal, I can resell it if I wanted to for 5k.

If you can, try to replace the DMF with a bonehead simple single mass flywheel from a different model. It's common for VWs to use a G60 SMF to replace the stupid DMF after it falls apart. I'm not sure if Ford/Mazda will have one from another model that works in the same VW/Audi Lego way.

Update: I am ready to drop the transmission. I have not had a chance to work on the car till today and part of yesterday.

So far I got the starter, air ducts, airfilter housing, battery and tray, shifter linkage off, passenger axle off, both hubs off the axels, fluid drained from the transmission, oil changed, and all electrical connectors to the transmission are disconnected.

All I have to do tommorow is remove the fluid line and start unbolting and drop the sucker.

I didn't get a chance to read all the posts, but I get clutches from Carquest Auto Parts and get new only. Do not cheap out on the clutch. If you have done a FWD clutch job before you can probably get by doing it w/o the book.

Never, only RWD trucks and jeeps.. This is completely different to me, but I am always down for a challenge and a learning experience.
