Engines are more efficient at higher loads. (Put another way, the more you put your foot into it, the more efficient the engine is). All else being equal, the smaller engine will deliver better fuel economy.

Oops.

Jeep, there was some merit to what you said back in the olden days of carbruetors. At high throttle settings their power valves opened up and puked a lot of extra gas into the engine for a power mixture. Modern fuel injected engines meter the gas much more accurately and don't need the overkill to survive at high power outputs.

The Mercury version has a much nicer interior. Drove it and power seems just fine. Burns 87.

Should be a good car to own, but watch out for depreciation if you're a frequent trader.

Looks like a good used deal in a couple of years. I like them. Nice and big. The duratec is a good engine IMHO. A wagon would be a nice...oh, wait, is that the freestyle? Nevermind...

Gas prices are luring families back from SUVs into big family cars. This is an economical choice.

by what metric is it underpowered???

Its not a drag racing car. Has plenty of power and a fine power to weight ratio for my needs.

Not too bad looking, in a scaled up last gen passat way.

The one person I know who owns one has been very pleased with it.

JMH

Of course, the term "underpowered" is a subjective characterization of an objective, measurable quantity (power), and of course, many will disagree with its use here. That said, I do find it tremendously perplexing why the 500 has to "make do" with the 200 hp version of this engine, while the smaller, lighter Fusion gets a version that cranks out 220 hp. OTOH, I also wonder just how far this seemingly endless upward movement of hp outputs is going to go before it just becomes ridiculous. I remember mid-80s Chevy Celebrities with 125 hp 2.8L V-6s that everyone thought was respectable for a small six. Two hundred would have seemed almost obscene in 1985. Are we going to be seeing 400-500 hp family sedans in 2020? That do the quarter mile in 12 seconds flat? When will be need anti-gravity car seats for our kids? But back to earth in the present -- since Ford obviously has easy access to the 220 version, I'd vote for it in this large car, but that's just me.

The car should have at least 240-250 hp/tq.

This car is huge! Load it with four people and their stuff for a weekend trip out of town, and I can only imagine the lack of passing power.

The germans and japanese can extract a lot of power from engines in the 3.0-3.5 liter range. Why cant Ford?

I do like the Japanese sourced 6 spd auto and Euro Haldex AWD system.

It needs the Yamaha V-8 that are in the Volvo SUV's.

Islandvic, my step-mom has one. It's very under powered considering all the competition's V6's are pushing 240HP +. It's a very big car and handles surprisingly well for a big car. Interior has way too much plastic. I personally don't like the car at all and would look at other options.

I have checked out the Mercury Montego.

Way better value actually.

It has HID Xenon lights, LED rear tailights, two tone leather upholstery, digital auto A/C with driver/pass controls, rear a/c vent, all of which standard on the base model.

Perhaps that's because it has a CVT transmission and therefore it has no "gears" to select amongst???

It's not really needed once you figure out that, without pushing the button, if you are in "R" the lever will stop in "D" if you pull it backwards.

And "R" is one click backwards from "P" which is always full forward.

I think this is all Federally mandated, too, so it should be the same for all vehicles sold in the USA with an automatic.

The CVT still has Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive? In the Montego I tested, I found it very annoying having to look down at the center console to be sure I was in the right "gear".

Cost cutters run amok.
