So I'm in college right now and need a car to last me but I don't have much money. My '06 Five-Hundred has almost 230,000 miles on it (six speed) and the transmission is going out, it's getting a lot worse. It occured to me that maybe I should consider replacing i myself to save having to buy a new vehicle. I have changed the clutch before on a Dodge SRT-4 and it was a nightmare but I think I could manage again. My question is, is it possible to find a new or used transmission for these cars? If so where would I look?

FYI I have tried changing fluid, lucas transmission fix it, and looking for TSBs.

I have the six speed transmission, not the CVT. I have looked in junkyards before and never seen a car this new there. I don't think I'd have any luck. Are there other options?

I think the transmission is a weak spot with that vehicle. So finding used is more a wildcard is how good is the new one.

Drive the SRT???? Maybe once you are bored with the mods(happens eventually) bring back to stock and its a decent powerful run about. Former Stage II WRX owner who enjoyed mods one year and then used Stage I and enjoy it. No money loss in buying selling/mods for me as all used.

They had either a CVT or a AWF21 6 speed auto gearbox. You should be able to find some in a salvage yard. A lot of times it is the electronic valve body that goes bad on these, its around $1439 with exchange for a new one.

It's always fun for us when quickie lubes put ATF in the CVT unit, they usually go about 100 feet before they tear themselves apart and we get to put a ~$7500 CVT in on the quickie's dime. I think we have done 3 so far.

I don't own the SRT-4, I sold partly to go to college, if I had that option I wouldn't be posting this thread?

I agree Miller88, If I could find one with under 100,000 and replace it myself I'm guessing that I would be set for another few years atleast

What exactly is the issue with the trans? Is it flaring between certain gears? Have you done any drain and fills on the trans? With a problematic trans space the drain and fills 500 miles apart. I'd try some Lubeguard Red to help condition the old dried out rubber seals. I wouldn't use any other additives other than the Lube Guard. They also have an anti-shudder fix available on Amazon. AA or Autozone may have it also.

That website is not working right now but thank you. I will look into it. Where do the parts on that site come form, junkyards? And is it usually a safe bet to install parts from sites like that? Are they trustworthy and honest?

A fluid drain and fill is a start. You might have a drain plug if it is the aw21 transmission. I have the same one in my fusion. Fill through the drain plug I have the 3.0 V6. My capacity is shown at about 7.5 quarts. Roughly half or less came out. I would use the Ford fluid specifically for that transmission and not the Mercon varieties. It is about 6-8 per quart at the Dealer. Read the owners manual and it tells where the fluid should be on the dipstick for what operating temperature.
