This is the 2005-2007 model year of the Ford Five Hundred but it shares many things in common with the Ford Freestyle, Mercury Montego, and
the 2008 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable as well.
In the gauge cluster of these cars if you have a higher trim line, it contains a little digital dot matrix display that Ford called a Message Center at the time... This shows things like a system check (eg door ajar) and also MPG and odometer display as well with I believe is a vacuum display..
There is also one large what appears to be alpha-numeric digit included at the right of dot matrix display. This has NEVER worked in my car, and after watching numerous videos of that gauge cluster I have never seen it active on any of them either. My guess is this was to display the automatic transmission gear selection position.... as interestingly it does not appear that any model from these years have it anywhere in the gauge cluster or a mechanical needle like display that many American cars have always used over the years with column shift. Of course this car has a floor mounter shift selector.. I believe this was supposed to display the "P" "R" "N" "D" "2" "1" position of the gear lever but for some odd reason Ford never activated this feature...
If anyone can solve the puzzle I'd be grateful . I bet that a tool like Forscan could activate this feature but not sure...
