Ford Engines - Maximum 20 wt OCI's?

Well yes, the proper name for the 4.6 cam caps are the "camshaft bearing cap" or the "camshaft bearing cap cluster" (for Romeos), but I have found when most people refer to camshaft bearings they are referring to removable cam bearing inserts seen in most engines. Most Ford OHC engines don't have these.

Will stick with the 5-20 for the near term at least.

Tig1,

Did you notice ANY advantages in using Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 after starting out with Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30? Such as increased fuel mileage, oil consumption, noise, etc?

By the way, with Advance Auto parts, ridding their shelves of Motorcraft FULL Synthetic 5W20 @ $2.95 / qt, your engine would be the perfect test bed to compare the differences between the two products. That Motorcraft runs quite a bit thinner at both 40C and 100C than Mobil 1 5W20 and has the same HT/HS (2.7) as Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20. [I am assuming that this is the same product as Kendall GT1-1 Full Synthetic with a motorcraft label on it].

What do y'all think?
I dont know why most folk mention xw-20 and Mobil 1 0w30 in the same breath. The 0w30 is a mid to thick 30 weight. Now, Havoline DS 5w30 is a near SAE 20 grade 30 weight.

Both Duratechs started out on the 5-30EP. Johnny convinced me to try the 5-20EP as he was having great success with it. In Dec I switched the Fusion over and did notice the engine was slightly smoother and very slightly quiter. Same with the Focus. With that said the 5-30EP was outstanding. I drove the Fusion to Florida and was very careful to check the mileage with the on board MPG indicator. In Nov 09 I got 30.9
MPG with 5-30 ep, and in March I got 32.8 with the 5-20EP, both trips to Gainsville same route and speed. No oil comsumption at all with either oil.

Tell the truth tig1, you miss the Grand Marquis with that beautiful 4.6?

I think they do because 0W-xx's still sound brand new to a lot of folks so they associate them.

I'd say 0w30 has the most potential to be misunderstood by the public. Look at GC it's almost up near a 40 weight but the '0' implies (to the layman) that it is thinner than thin.

5w-20 and 0w-20 are more equivalent to each other than 5w30 and 0w30 are. Well I guess there aren't really enough of them for me to make that statement. I have no familiarity with the boutique oils so pardon me if I'm wrong about that.

The 4.6 was a good engine. No doubt the new owner will be able to get a lot of miles out of that car.
