Well.. planned obsolescence is doing its work, yet again.

One of Ford very best Ecoboost engine, the 2.7 Ecoboost will no longer be offered starting MY 2027.

I first read about this on Fordtechmakuloco’s instagram post earlier today. Great guy if you want to learn about ford engines and how to fix and properly maintain them. He’s on YouTube.

From my days of working at a ford dealership, the 2.7 Ecoboost was honestly one of the best ford engines in my opinion. Never saw anything wrong with them, at least no where near the amount of problems as any of the other modern ford engines.

The news is real. You won’t be able to buy a Ford with the 2.7 Ecoboost anymore starting model year 2027.

Ford is placing the 3.0 Ecoboost in place of the 2.7 Ecoboost. 3.0 and the 2.7 is kind of similar in their architectures, but 3.0 is unfortunately known for having cam phaser issues, and carbon buildup. 2.7 has both port and direct fuel injectors, while the 3.0 only has direct injectors.

Why would Ford get rid of the 2.7 when it sold well and people love them for its durability and power for how small it is? Because unfortunately they are too reliable in fords standard, so they are just replacing it with the 3.0 because that will bring them more money from their service centers…

in my opinion, ford should have got rid of the 3.0 and replaced it with the 2.7. That would actually be a great thing.

I believe they also use aluminum in the block for the 3.0 as opposed to the CGI on the 2.7. Lighter weight is usually a good thing, maybe they realized that the 2.7 was massively overbuilt and didn't need the strength of iron.

You'd think the phasers would be common between the two of them, but I guess not. I also don't understand why they're going backwards to GDI only.

Buddy has the 3.0L in a Ranger Raptor … It’s no slouch …

Seems like I read that all of Fords V6 gas turbo engines will have one of those pesky GPF (gas particulate filter) in 2027. Might be the 2.7 EB lost enough power to make it no go.

The Powerboost 3.5 didn't lose any with it.

Most likely is that there's no need for 2 'small displacement' V6's in the lineup. They're putting the 3.0 in more and more things, it doesn't make sense to keep the 2.7 around if the 3.0 can cover the same applications.

Gdi is an emissions issue most likely. I'm sure it's similar to why the carburetor was phased out. It got harder and harder to pass emissions and tune with them.

Most manufacturers are going to a combination Port/Direct injection these days. Not only keeps the backs of the intake valves cleaner, but also helps in certain cold start and high output situations.

Having GDI only on the 3.0 is a step backwards from the GDI/Port they're starting to use everywhere else.

Getting the 3.0 just as reliable shouldn't be difficult. Did Ford or anyone post 2.7 sales numbers? Companies don't discontinue products for no reason.

It seems time for the builders to zero in on less designs - and improve what remains. Having both an 8 speed and 10 speed AT is another example

Never quite understood why GM bothered with that plan. The 8 speed was a turd, and the 10 speed can be questionable, pick one and roll with it.

I'm not a Ford guy personally but the 2.7 is one heck of an engine. My FIL has an XLT with that engine for work and has over 200k miles without any major repairs so far.

Cost cutting in my opinion. Cgi block, 6 extra injectors, overbuilt, less SKUs to stock. Definitely a step back, but hey as long as engines make it past warranty, that's the goal
