Ford CEO gets a "reality check" on the state of EV charging

So Farley takes a trip to check out the ease of real world use of one of his company's EV offerings and he's an out of touch suit?
The guy seems to be trying to get a ground level view of what using these vehicles involves.
I don't see how anyone can spin this into any sort of problem.
Might be a good ploy to sell more regular F150s if he appears to see EVs as a problem.

I just don’t understand if that was the goal why no one in the company would have walked him through how to use it more effectively.

Farley should be doing research on this stuff before going all in. Where are all the brains at Ford?

Don’t forget that the Big 3 short sightedness became apparent in the 70’s. It can happen to any company.

CEO Farley knows exactly what’s going on. He is trying to make things work by acting like one of the guys.
Farley knows charging is the critical component to EV sales success. And he knows only 1 company figured that out from the start. And did something about it.

Farley inherited a mess. But to assume he just realized his Lightning has charging issues is ridiculous.

He might be incompetent. I won’t rule that out.
Incompetent, out of touch, or both - seems likely.

This is the reason that even though I don't like a lot of the things Elon Musk is doing - he is so impressive. In interviews he seems to have a pretty good grasp on what is going on in the world of regular people. Farley - seems not so much.

You may be right. Seems very risky though.

He gets feed back from the dealers, like the time they hooked a trailer to the Lightning and was going 90 miles and after 60 miles the truck was out of power and no charging station in sight. The dealer sent out a tow truck to pick it up. But the Lightning is the one I would want, at least you can haul a genset in the box.

That is a problem for sure. Towing seems to hit it hardest of any EV. I think that comes down to it being adapted from the standard truck instead of a fresh build.

No, Ford brought Hackett - aka hatchet man, in in 2017 specifically to right size the company, cut the sedan production, etc. He fulfilled his role, then retired - leaving Farley a "clean slate" as planned. This was by design. Now if you want to say its a lousy strategy I may not disagree with that.

This is typical of these big, old companies. They have no visionaries, only ladder climbers. They manage like a football team - bring in the nickel package, or the dime package, etc as the play demands. A few years later, they bring the next formation in.

This guy proves what medical people say, 'Can't fix stupid but it can be sedated'.

Assuming Ford doesn't know the range capabilities of the Lightning or any EV is ridiculous.
This assumes they did zero testing and have no clue what they are doing.
Ford, like all the big guys, tend to rest on their laurels and depend on brand loyalty. That only goes so far.

CEO Farley is tasked with all the changes required to remake the company. Plant closures, dealership sales distribution model, changing product mix (as you posted) are all parts of the mess he inherited. I wish him well.

I think many in here discount what it is to run a giant corporation with unionized workers. Unions control what they can and cant do. Unionized companies are not flexible like non union.
To discredit CEOs based on not knowing facts is silly. These people are fairly intelligent. Why do you think any super successful corporation, whether is Starbucks, Tesla or BMW try to keep their workers happy at all expense so they dont vote for a union? They lose control of the company is the answer.
