I am concerned with supporting Ford since they are going through hard times.

I was wondering if anyone knew how much of a percentage actually goes to Ford when purchasing Motorcraft oil, or do nearly all of the profits go to Conoco Phillips?

What's wrong with Ford getting a nice volume discount for choosing Motorcraft?

Why not go after GM for choosing AC Delco as a filter supplier (or) Anco as another auto manufactuer's wiper supplier?

Why do you need to know the percentage of derived income from these sponsored products?

spunky, jason929rr, jdm90,

Good question guys. I'm a Ford fan too and would certainly choose Motorcraft oil over other brands if it helped 'em out.

No one said anything was wrong. I think he wants to SUPPORT Ford and is just curious as to how much of a cut they get from CP.

Ford probably marks the oil up pretty decently. I probably shouldn't guess, and I really have no idea (so someone will mug me) but I imagine 20-40% or so.....

I doubt it will help their bottom line much, but I like their offerings.

But I use Tropartic not Motorcraft because Ford can't compete on price. That's not my problem to fix its Ford's overhead and competiveness Ford needs to fix.

Ford certainly benefits from this as the MOTORCRAFT name has a long branding history. I just paid $2.12 at WALLY and Kendall was $1.79 (store depleted so I paid for it @ WALLY}.So as I see it , Ford probably profits 15% for the MOTORCRAFT label, if all the C/P products are indeed the same.

Right on. But, for those who nevertheless feel compelled to help Ford out, write a check in the amount of the price difference between TropArtic and Motorcraft oil you use over the year and send it directly to Ford at year's end - no since paying sales tax on the amount you're voluntarily contributing to Ford. For those who really wanna help Ford out, buy some of their junk-rated, high yield, long term corporate bonds. Now that would be a material act of faith in the automaker's long term survival prospects. Just be aware beforehand that even Congress, itself not always accociated with prudence with a taxpayer buck, hasn't jumped into the fray with low interest bail-out money as it did for Chrysler in the '70s...

(If Ford goes belly-up, though, I'll be watching for as much Dollar Tree fire-sale priced Motorcraft 10W-30 as my trunk will hold.

Ya think the Motorcraft oil would go on sale if Ford went ta-ta's up?

As an aside, I've been reading there's a sizable faction within Ford's board that wants to take the company off the stock market. The thinking is, they can plan longer and wiser without the constant drumming of investors and Ford-rich mutual funds for immediate profit and dividends.

I don't guess any of that has gained traction, they've burned through their cash from the boom, they won't be buying all that stock back. I think they're most likely to go into a re-organization, especially if gasoline prices go up (along with penalties for driving gas-guzzling SUVs) as I anticipate with our new leadership. They just aren't positioned to sell eco-cars that people want in sufficient volume to make a buck. They're going to have to buy time somewhere along the way.

Yeah, this was exactly what I was getting at...

I don't think anyone should read too much into this. I understand that I could voluntarily donate to Ford by cutting them a check or purchasing some of their stock. I understand that the amount Ford recieves from my oil purchases may be minuscule, but I would be happy knowing that they received a certain percentage from purchasing Motorcraft oil as well as other Motorcraft products.

More specifically, I like performing 5000 oci's on my Vic. Currently using Syntec 5w20, but a lot of people say that Motorcraft is good for that interval. I would just feel better purchasing Motorcraft oil knowing what kind of percentage Ford received.

If perhaps there is a FoMoCo employee out there that can disclose the information legally, that would be awesome;)

I was watching an auto show and they were talking about improvements in quality in American brands (I believe talking to a Nissan guy) in comparisson to Japanese and he straight out said the gap was closing very quickly, and pointed to Ford specificly as the American company closing the gap fastest. Just FYI.

semi hijacking the thread, first off, Ford hopefully makes a profit marketing the Motorcraft name. It has a captive audience at all the Dealerships.

Secondly, the big threes biggest problem right now is brand loyality. How do you get a Honda or Toyota or Nissan owner to switch over to a Ford? That was the Japaneses' problem to solve 20 years ago and they solved that with Quality.
I do believe that the quality of Ford, GM and Chrysler offerings currently is on a par with the Japanese. Right up there.
The problem as I see it is a perceived "value" in the Japanese vehicles on resale. They simply are perceived to be a longer life vehicle with less maintenance and the and don't depreciate as rapidly. We have 25 guys out on the road in our company. We reimburse for a fixed cost plus milage. Only 2 guys have a big three car (US). Toyota and Hondas abound. Why? Because at the end of 3 years the guys can sell the car for 65% or more of the original cost. The Big three US cars you only get about 50%. Based on my little edge of the world, that seems to be the important things with our guys.

The only way to help ford out is to buy a new vehicle from them, and get your friends to buy one.
But why would you want to help ford out? Reward them for making gas guzzling vehicles? I have owned many fords over the years and own 2 now but, I am dissapointed with what they are selling now. If they made a car that got 40+ mpg I would buy it in a heartbeat. But I am looking elsewhere for my next vehicle.

Every company makes gas guzzling vehicles. Ford & Chevy trucks (includes SUVs) both do well when stacked up against Nissan & Toyota trucks with with comparable options and engines. If you want to reward them buy one of their fuel efficient vehicles that compares to a similar foreign model. I may be wrong but when comparing actual apples to apples I don't believe the gap all that large. You as the consumer are the one making the statment by the model you buy.
