Ford 4X4 CM rebuildable?

2005 Ford Ranger FX4
I'm fairly certain my 4WD Control Module, in title, is bad. From 2WD she went into 4WHigh then into 4WLow and now won't come out.
There is no flashing of any indicator so I assume the electric shifter motor is "in position and OK".
Also, a failed 4X4CM is said to be common.

Are these things rebuilt or tossed in the trash? If rebuildable, has anyone had experience with a rebuilding/repair shop?

Does anyone know where the 4X4CM lives in a 2005 Ranger?
I've seen behind the radio, behind the glovebox and behind the passenger kick panel.

It is in the dash. You have to remove the radio and A/C control to access it. They are obsolete from Ford. 1L5Z-7E453-AC was the part number

I guess it's not stupid to ask if I should disconnect the battery before diving into the dash. I'm going to.

On my sales history I can go back to 2011 and I have 1 sale in March of 2014 on that part. Getting Ford modules rebuilt seems like hit or miss.

I think you would want a better confirmation of the diagnosis before going down the road of replacing or repairing the control module. Even if you can obtain a new one, electronics are not typically returnable if not needed.

That said, I have had good luck finding used stuff (with a warranty from the seller) on eBay. I bought a Bosch ABS module inexpensively that way, and also a Hella transformer/ignitor for my HID headlights on one of my BMWs. Bought each for under $100 delivered and they were both many hundreds of dollars online.

BTW, I see new old stock available on eBay and rebuilt available on Amazon. With eBay buyers have good protection from fraud. Just don't delay installing it immediately. Same goes with Amazon, they actually have a stated 30 day limit for resolution. Always pay with a credit card.

Be it known, I checked the fuses before starting this thread.

Then the darndest thing happened.
Upon start-up, the 4WLO light was out. I left the switch in 2WD when I parked it with it stuck in 4WLO.
I cycled it through 4WHI and 4WLO and back on a brief drive.
The TC fluid is OK so maybe the positioning disc o' contacts in the electric motor is dirty.
Can these motors grow balky (fail to start spinning)?
