Ford 4.6 owners which filter?

I was wondering if any Ford 4.6 (or others)owners use something different than the FL820S motorcraft filter on their motors, and if you do please state the brand (i.e. Wix) and the reasons why you use that brand of filter over the motorcraft. Thank you.

From 2001, up until 6 months ago, our 4.6L '97 Expedition used a combination of Fram & whatever brand of filters various quick-lube shops used.

Who knows if any engine damage occured because of this. Probably not....I DID at least have the oil changed regularly, every 4-5k miles.

On the Expy's next oil change, I'm going to use a Mobil 1 M1-210. I'll cut that open when the Expy's done with it, too.

Many of us have found that the FL820s is a really good filter for a great price. I have tried some other brand name filters, but my engine would tick when I started it. The FL820s is the only filter I have found that eliminates this start-up ticking, even when used for 10,000 miles.

I've got to agree with Medic. The Motorcraft FL820S is a real sleeper bargain oil filter. While it was an unbelievable bargain at Walmart for $2.97(the Walmart by me still has lots of them

) the Advance Auto store down the street from Walmart carries them for $3.68, everyday price. Still a bargain when you look at PurOne's going for near $5/each and even Fram's going for $4.50, unless you can get them on special. Not that you'd want them anyway

! I've run a 8,200 mile OCI on the wife's 2002 Explorer with the Motorcraft FL820S and it held up great. The insolubles were well within specs. I'm currently running a 10,000 mile OCI with that filter. I'll post the results, but I'm confident of good results unless there is a freak quality control problem

If this filter can last and produce reasonable insolubles for 10,000 miles why pay 3X times the price for a Mobil 1 or K&N oil filter? I don't race so I don't need the extra filter burst strength

on my 98 expy and lin. conti i use instead of the fl820s a larger filter fleetguard lf3315 and bald win b281...on my 98 vic i use fleetguard lf3681 or baldwin b329 these two cross to the fl820s..the larger one doesn't fit into the space.

Thanks for the replies, our walmart stopped selling the FL820S motorcraft filter, we don't have any autozones or advance autos here, just schucks, so if I want a motorcraft filter I have to go to the dealership, they want $7.00 for the FL820S. I can get the WIX equivilant for around $4.00, I assume it's still a good filter too.

Wix filter are excellent...and if there's a NAPA near you, NAPA Gold filters are made by Wix...

If you can get Motorcraft at a good price it is probably the best value on the market. Check out the independant auto parts stores. Some of them stock the common Motorcraft sizes. Good construction, thread end bypass, silicon ADBV, good media.

Purolator Premium filters are an excellent low price filter IMO while Wix/NAPA Gold, Baldwin and Fleetguard also are excellent midpriced filters.

Another option is to buy six or twelve at a time mailorder to keep the shipping costs down. www.rockauto.com stocks Motorcraft and Wix. www.adiesel.com sells Baldwin.

Best filter for the money: Motorcraft
Tweener: NAPA Gold

Definitely Motorcraft is my first choice.

After that, Wix for the cars I plan on keeping a long time and SuperTech for the cars I don't want to spend the extra money on.

My first choice is Motorcraft FL820S and my second choise if PureOne.
