i have a 99 mercury mystique with a 2.0 in it and i have noticed that lately during cold start up, mostly in the morning, i hear what sounds like a lower knocking sound for a few minutes. I dont recall hearing this before. Nothing has changed as far as service over the years. regular OCI and filter changes. Currently running Valvoline 5w20 and purolator classic filter. Are these engines prone to piston slap or anything that anyone knows of.

thanks for the replys, why would VCT make this noise and how do you check it with a stethoscope?

If it was mine, I would throw on an OEM Motorcraft oil filter just to rule out an anti drainback valve problem. Those engines were particularly sensitive to that concern.

MC 400s filter is a good start.
When cold those VCTs don't like thick oil, but you seem OK in that respect with 5-20.
A few cold starts while you listen closely is necessary.
We have to isolate that noise.
Removing the serpentine belt will eliminate anything with that system.

Could also be piston slap especially if it just occurs when cold. Not sure if this engine is prone to it or not ill let others more knowledgable than mself chime in.
