Bear with the story.....This time of year in my household is termed "silly season." Travel baseball rules spring/summer and tapers fall and winter. This year particular crazy as my 15 is playing 16+ college showcase and my 13 playing for the same organization. Friday and Saturday was showcase at Sacred Heart Univ for the oldest; youngest was off to Baseball Heaven in Long Island for a Father's Day tournament. Short of it, I headed to Long Island 5am Sunday and was truly in heaven!! Wide open roads, no cops, and just me and the gas pedal 85/90mph. Verizano bridge was EMPTY!!! Ahhhh.... I knew I'd pay later.

Trip home, Yaphank LI to 95 is about 45 miles. First 30 were smooth sailing at 60/70mph. Remainder was typical. Traffic added 1hr 15min to the trip home. I ended up home at 8pm. I had to come to grips with my, insanity, eccentric nature, idiocy, neuroticism you choose the adjective as they all fit. My last oil change on the Subaru was just under 81k at the end of September 2020. On the ride home I hit 89,150 mark. So what did I do? I grabbed a Bud Light seltzer ice tea and proceeded to change my oil. Father's Day be ****ed!!

Very excited! I had a new filter cutter (Perform 66490) that has been dying for its first cut!! This is for you, Wayne from your NY buddy!! Filter has a little over 16k on it. 8k Per OCI. I do have a question about the wide pleats where the metal connector holds the pleats together. Why so wide?

Probably due to the way it's manufactured when the seam is made. Doesn't matter anyway on a wire backed media ... the pleats are not going to bend or deform during use because of the ridged wire backing.

That's what I thought. Pleats were rather consistently straight and looked good. Had me wondering.

Looks great just a tip you will find cutting filters its better to pull the gasket off to cut.

I think I get you....meaning the removal of the gasket will give you a cleaner cut?

I can honestly say; very few spin on filters I’ve cut open and posted have I removed the o ring gasket from. That’s just me

You Sir, just entered my heart and soul! New England fans feel the same! Born and bred! Took my kids to Lambo in 2019 v Vikings. September and 85+ temps! This was the game both lickers deserved to be cut if you remember.

The pleats by the seam are further apart to get the crimper jaws in there. Never seen an Ultra tear, though, I don't think it's possible! Maybe a high powered rifle could do it...

Ultras are good filters but since I only run 5k oil changes, it’s not worth it IMO. I can basically use any filter

that tool makes for a very clean cut, but at $76 I don't think I'll be acquiring one.

Sadly there are no cheap purpose built filter cutters

If you take your time and don't mind a mess, aviation shears or tin snips work just fine.

How cheap do you want them? Amazon has cheaper ones at $36-$69 but they look a little flimsy compared to the Proform.

That one for $36 looks like a pretty decent design for the cost. Looks like it will cut pretty small diameter filters, which is a plus.
