for my beamer!

So, I bought a new (used) 04 325ci with 75k on the clock.car was repossed a couple of times, and spent most of its life in dealers apparently. it seems to be decently taken care of. someone knew what they were doing at some point, installed strut tower, and subframe plates.. and a few other things (e46 specific problems that were addressed)


anyways, Im bout to change the oil for the first time. 10k coming up. thats what the dealer sticker said to change it at, but Im not paying a bmw dealer to change it.

right now, Im thinking Pennzoil Ultra Euro 5w40. i know this will work, its approved by bmw. but im just wondering if there is something better

im a big fan of ester oils (motul) but i cant find one that meets LL-01.

I drive the car 45miles to work one way, all 55mph hwy with 1 35 mph zone and no stop lights (i dont think you could ask for an easier commute on an engine and oil)


any thoughts? better choices?

what an excellent car! As of now, I'm running Ultra 5w40 in my fiat, and that oil has already made a huge reputation for quality. I truly wouldnt mind running it in my car as long as I can. Now I'm still a novice on oil, what are the advantages to a high estor oil?

thanks. i love my car. i wont ever own anything but a bmw. (as far as a commuter car)

the ester oils usually handle heat and storage a little better, as well as naturally clean better. all i ever ran in my drag bikes was 300v with a dose of zddp. those engins were clean as a pin and ran forever. one sat for 3 years and there was not a spec of corrosion anywhere in the engine.

.and to top that I beleive ester oils are much more enviro friendly both in creation and disposal.

Buy what's specified at the lowest cost for your Bimmer. Mobil 1 0W-40 at WalMart for $22 per jug is hard to beat.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about meeting LL-01 unless your planning on pushing the OCIs.

All the oils mentioned are fine.
Since you like Motul you could run 300V 5w30 or 0W-40 if you wanted or even Red Line 0W-40 but they are overkill.

As gregoran has pointed out Mobil 1 0W-40 is hard to beat on value.

to whoever said that about the oci..i do plan on pushing it. as I said, I have a long but easy commute. I plan on having the oil tested at 5k and going from there.

I would (and have) use Mobil 1 0w-40 or Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40, depending on which you can get cheaper. Both are excellent LL-01 approved lubricants, which, as you noted, are what your application calls for.

i cant find the PU locally.. does the Mobil 1 Extended Performance meet LL-01? i dont think its approved by bmw but my car isnt in warranty so whatever.

No it isn't but they are long drain oils.
The EP 5W/10W-30 oil's are also light, not likely too light as I run that viscosity in my BMW but not a viscosity I'd recommend for your climate if you don't have an oil pressure gauge to confirm, particularly if you're going for a long OCI.

Stick with Mobil 1 0W-40, it's the no-brainer choice.

Yeah.... And Mobil 1 0w-40 is a 40-weight oil, what's the issue?
