Life is a beach EH Nick? the filter threads point up,stick your head under the front of the car. It is easy to reach the filter and drain plug. The trans lines have those quick connects though. the M/C filter is a nice one ,with out looking at the one I bought "yes I did, along with M/C 5w-20 for the 1,000 mile or so first oil change as well as trans oil and filter to change the oil at around 5,000 miles" " had the bypass on the dome end but I could be wrong.

Use the filter and oil (weight) specified by Ford until the warranty expires. Why mess around with it? I would however do a FIRST change at about 1k miles.
My '09 is VERY easy to change. The filter is easy to get to as it's right up front with nothing in the way.
I use Pennzoil Ultra and the Motorcraft filters. The Purolator is just as good though. I'm currently on a 6 month OCI that puts me at about 5 to 6k miles.
It's been a real nice car for the money....so far.

A little over 800 miles on the car and I'm going to change out the FF and grab a sample for UOA. I have to exchange the filter because the one time I didn't check the filter, the bottom was dented in.

So it begins.

Well I WAS going to change it today. But holy bejeezus that oil filter is torqued down on that thing. I had to go to advance and get a new cap wrench to fit, and then when I got back I discovered that the oil filter was dented.

On a semi-related topic, I am a HUGE fan of the location of the oil filter on this thing. Crawl under the front bumper (no need to jack up the car even!) and it is RIGHT THERE. Awesome. No more squeezing between hot engine, hot transmission, hot exhaust, and everything else to get to the blasted oil filter.

Cap wrenches are worthless. They'll slip if the filter is tight. You need a pliers type filter wrench.

Does your filter have a splashguard over it? On the Mazda 3 there's a splashguard, but the splashguard has a cutout that doesn't line-up 100%.

The cap style was all I could use on the cavalier, impossible to get anything else in there, and it worked fine. If this one doesn't work, I'll pick up something else but I haven't had a problem with it yet. And I could definitely get a different wrench style in there, plenty of room.

I wish I could say the same thing for my 3.7L Jeep Liberty! Pliers won't work on the Liberty, no problem getting the first filter off with a cap wrench. I made sure I tightened it up like a human when I put it back on.
