is WD-40 ok to clean an air filter in the bike?

should I use Dawn? The manual says to use a solvent. What is a solvent?

You will be forever trying to clean it with WD40. Solvent is just that. Solvent used to clean parts. It's very close to Kerosene.

mineral spirits work well to break down the filter oil. then I soak with simple green and rinse with water.

or

use the PJ1 filter oil and filter cleaner. that combo makes the process almost easy.

There was a thread on this in recent past, may can still find it. I would squeeze out what I could, with a paper towel wrap 1st. Then I have had good success with a non abrasive type of hand cleaner, use it straight no water at first. 2-3 times may be necessary, and use water for the last one. Squeeze out in a few paper towels again, and let dry for a day, then oil as want to.

I have used straight simple green and it works best. I hate cleaning filters.
