I would appreciate your recommendations for an engine using a flat tappet cam. The engine is Land Rover 4.6 v-8. LR spec a 10w-40 weight oil as the preferred grade and are specific about using Castrol (no specific product, just the brand name, rated A2) in the US owner's manual. In Europe, 5w-40 is recommended, probably because it is common there vs the US until recently.

I know ZDDP is important. What about moly? Are the ZDDP levels in Mobil 1 Truck and SUV enough.

The crank bearings are still lead babbit over copper AFAIK.

Thanks!

Any of the XW40's would work. I suggest Mobil 1 5W40 or Rotella 5W40 for synthetics, and Rotella 15W40 for a conventional oil.

That Land Rover would probably do well on Castrols 5w-40 505 oil , Kendall 5w-40 and 76 lubes 5w-40 . All under or right at 5 bucks a quart and no moly in them . Elf and Motul versions are available now as well .

Just to add some more options .

10W-40 Castrol Syntec and Syntec blend are available in the USA and are ACEA A3. In TX I would use a 15w40 HDMO. They all have plenty of ZDDP.

A lot depends on temps and how often you plan to change it!

A nice conventional oil is Delo 15W40 CI-4+ Walmart has it for $5.88 gallon.I think you would be hard pressed to go wrong with Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil. The 5W40 rateing means it can be run year round with no problems and it was designed to protect comerical diesel engines origanaly so it will protect your engine great. It is able to do extended drains in most applications as well so meeting the OEM OCI is no problem.

If money should get tight or you decide to do shorter intervals and want close to synthetic charteristics Rotella-T Synthetic is available at Walmart for $12 a gallon and is also a 5W40. They market it as a synthetic but it is not even in the same league as Mobil 1 Truck and SUV!

All of your HDEO like Delo 15W40,Delvac 1300 Super 15W40, Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W40, Rotella-T Synthetic....... are going to have plenty of ZDDP to protect fkat tapets. They will also be overbased on calcium wich can act as an additional AW additve as well as TBN enhancer.

I almost forgot to mention Mobil 1 0W40! It has a HTHS of 3.6 so it will also protect really well. It has a very good additive package as well!

Thanks folks. I put Rotella T Syn 5w-40 in there as I have been using it in our other cars and had a couple gallons in the garage. I will do a used oil analysis at about 3700 miles as a baseline to beat. Delo 400 CI-4 + looks like a great option. Both are easily available at Walmart.

I looked at Castrol Syntec 10w-40 and just can't believe it is worth the 4.89/qt vs Mobil 1 or Amsoil being a group III. OTOH they did spend the bucks to get the A3 rating and I would like to be able to rely on the HTHS to keep cam wear nil.

BTW the factory fill smelled completely spent at 1300 miles. Not so much fuel dilution as spent hydrocarbons. I didn't figure a used oil analysis would be that relevant yet.
