It comes off of my wifes 2005 F150 with the 4.6. Oil was Mobil 1 5w20, mileage is somewhere between 3 and 5k.

Thanks for doing and posting a pic of the "new" Motorcraft FL820S cut open. It looks like the by pass is now in the dome instead of in the bottom of the filter as a coil spring. Ford always stressed that the by pass in the bottom of the filter was what they needed. The "old" Motorcraft filters have them in the bottom of the filter. The media is wavey and no "Purolater" string around the media. I thought wavy filter element meant high oil pressure. Is this Motorcraft filter still Purolator? I still have an old, 6+ years old Motorcraft FL820S and a "newer" version, maybe 2 years old, and both have the by pass in the inlet as a spring.

Huh? Bypass is in the thread end. Concave looking end cap is the dome end. Coil spring bypass is visible if you look closely.

Looks fine. With the exception of one time, the FL820S is the only filter my son used in his 4.6L Explorer. Motorcraft is a well made filter and designed particularly well for FoMoCo vehicles. Still made by Puro to Motorcraft specs.

A Mobil 1 filter went back on there, but with the exception of 3 quickie lube visits this truck has had MC filters. Im changing out my mom and step dads oil on the Aveo on my way to work Tues night. They have an OCOD on there now, with around 3500 miles or so on it. Going to cut it open at work Tuesday night.

Yeah, son's OLM (not true) light would go off at ~5k each time in the Explorer. The 820S ia a great filter for that OCI at a very reasonable price. M1 is a fine filter too, but a tad overkill for 5k, imo.

Lol, it was basically free with the oil at autozone. This is mostly where I buy the oil for my Ram that burns through 5000 miles in 2-3 months, my company pays for those oil changes though. I bought the oil for my next change at Wallys as Autozone only had the special with Fram filters a week ago. The total for a 5 qt jug and a single quart of Mobil 1 5w30(6 quart sump) and a Mopar filter was $43.xx. Today I bought the same thing save for the Mobil 1 filter and 5w20 instead of 30 for my wifes F150 and the grand total was $45.xx. So for a couple bucks more on one of those specials I will definitely run the upgraded filter, even for 5k.

According to Mobil site, this filter is good for extended ODI with Mobil 1 Extended Performance line, no replacement necessary, although they list Mobil 1 filter as an option. Thank you for your effort.

M1 for free, oci length cost benefit not as relevant. But, at the normal $10-13 price (my reference), M1 for 5k oci cost benefit not as favorable, imo. Everyday price, the 820S as shown here, nice match for ~5k oci.

Took her since March to get somewhere between 3-5k. I just dont feel comfortable leaving dino in for that long. I would have paid $43 at Wal Mart for the Mobil 1 and FL820s filter, or the $45 I paid at Autozone for the Mobil 1 and Mobil 1 filter. It all comes out in the wash, to me the extra $2 wont break me and besides it helped put a couple points on my rewards card.

Getting old really bites, I need new eyes! What threw me off was the fourth picture, with all the disassembled components. Next to the red ADBV there is a "spring" type piece that I thought looked like the spring used in domed bypass set ups. What is the purpose of that piece in the Motorcraft oil filter? I'm always willing to learn. Trouble is at my age I'm forgetting faster than I'm learning

That is just a flat spring used to push the inside canister down hard against the base plate of the filter and keep everything tight and sealed - it has nothing to do with the bypass mechanism.

Some filters like WIX and NAPA Gold use a coil spring in the dome end of the filter instead of the flat spring.
