Don't you think the filter manufacturer would use the FL-400 in place of the FL-910S if they are indeed the same filter?
Put an oversize filter on if you want, there will be no effect on engine life, it might give you a warm fuzzy.
Perhaps, but as I understand it, one of the deciding factors here is the length of the filter, and how far it sticks out under the engine. I know my Fusion has a shroud under the engine, and a removable 'door' that covers where the oil filter goes. In my experience, both the FL910s and FL400s go on the car and still clear the 'door' so I don't see this as a problem.
This was one of the factors I took into consideration when I was deciding whether or not to use the FL400s in place of the FL910s on my car.
One of the other considerations here was price. For some strange reason, the FL400s seems to be cheaper than the FL910s. If we stipulate that your statement "There is no documented proof that using a slightly larger oil filter has any bearing on engine life" is correct, then moving to the larger, cheaper filter, won't hurt a thing.
On the other hand, if it turns out that having a slightly larger filter, including the slightly larger holding, cooling, and filtering capacity, IS ultimately beneficial, then so much the better.
