Had Avira a few years ago. Many adds keep popping up.
Buy a subscription. Keep checking newegg.com, dealspl.us and other sites for deals. For the interim, use ESET.... it's free for 30 days and very good and very light on resources. I think WEBROOT also has a free trial version and their Cloud system is very light on resources. By the time either expires,. something good should pop-up on a yearly subscription.

Avira had 1 Ad that would pop up during updates; they no longer do. That is not "many". It's still the top rated antivirus for detection an AVcomparatives. There really is no reason to spend the money on paid computer security when you can obtain the same or better protection for free, especially if you take time and learn computer security instead of relying soley on antimalware.

In my real world testing NOD32 has provided better protection than Avira. Blocking URL's from being accessed for example, with Avira they want you to install that horrific "ASK toolbar" to get in-browser protection, NOD32 simply filters at the network level blocking the URL from even sending a reply to the browser in the first place from what I've observed.

I have a pretty large sample base. Not saying that my results are definitive or anything, but they've certainly shaped my opinion on the popular AV's.
 
in other news, a relatives computer with avira installed just got some kind of funky malware toolbar that was doing popups and installed fbi moneypak

cleaned it out in safe mode and installed ESET.

wasnt too bad for once.


I have went back to pay antivirus.. with deals you can get it Free after rebate or
avast is too bloated and slow, MSE total pos now, and dont get me started on avg.

avira is about the best free one left.

No, but as Rand indicated you get it with rebates and stuff that makes it essentially free.
 
eset has a free scanner you can run from the browser.

So far I have 3 3-lic copies of eset for FAR(free after rebate)

1 1-lic copy of kaspersky for FAR.

and 3 1-lic copies of eset for 4.99$ each(no rebate)

currently newegg has eset 7 2014 for 10.99$ with coupon(no rebate)

The Ask toolbar does suck; you can actually turn it off in the addons and still get web filtering; they're doing away with the Ask toolbar and creating a standalone browser protection utility that also incorporates their new cloud system. I'll admit Avira is a bit behind the times, but their on demand scan results are always near the top and on my system, it runs the smoothest.

Have you tried NOD32? It is incredibly lightweight.

is that for a year or just pay once???
 
For a year and a top-shelf Antivirus program that won't hog resources on your computer. I have both ESET and Webroot on my two systems.

That gives you 'total' protection, unlike most of the free ones, that limit you to basic antivirus-only coverage.

I called and they said they don't have the rights to the product keys any more,so they must have had so many then when sold out that was it.
