Fixed pinging with Amsoil Octane Boost

For those that have been following all the pinging issues with my 70 Lincoln Mk III with a 460 and 10.5:1 compression...thanks for the link to the octane boost comparison, that helped me find the right product.

I had the timing retarded to TDC to fix the pinging and there was still some pinging under high load. Then I started using Amsoil Octane Boost at the recommended one bottle for 15 gals of premium (93). All the pinging went away so I tried advancing the timing, was able to advance it to 3 degrees BTC. No pinging even on a super hot day, A/C on and 75mph and accelerating!

Other benefits:
1. I don't need to add the Redline lead substitute anymore (save a little $)
2. Amsoil Octane Boost is only $7.45 a bottle by the case.
3. Easy to store a case in the trunk.
4. Can take week long trips now

Have you thought about steam cleaning the pistons? There is a good chance that there is a lot of carbon build up which affects compression ratio and can cause piston top hot spots which can mean pinging / detonation.

Nice! Have you tried Toluene? Not saying it's better or worse just wondering.

Since there isn't much of a smog test you need to pass for something that old, I'd try a cooler thermostat, and a slightly richer mixture. One of the first half baked fixes for "smog control" back then was to run the engines hotter.

You could get a water injection system

I had one of these on my 69 Corvette and it worked great.

Landrew - yep, tried many versions of that.

eljfino - nope, don't want to mess with pouring at least three gallons of toluene for a tank. And what do I do when I'm on a long trip?

HerrStig - I'm running as rich as I can right now.

Loobed - didn't know a water injection system existed! If I have any more issues, I'll keep it in mind.

Does Xylene have the same effect/results, or is it not as good an octane booster as Toluene (or is a mix of the two the ultimate)?

Are you sure that the timing advance devices on your distributor are in good working condition? They also retard the timing under certain conditions (or reduce the advance, however one wants to look at it).
