Bay Area Air Quality Management District is asking me if I'm interested in crushing the car for $1000 to "save the air".

1993 Ford Escort LX, unknown mileage (5 digit odo, currently at 8000 miles, likely only 108000 miles because it is a city driven only car).

Inherit it from my in laws 2 years ago. At the time I replaced the radiator, radiator cap, spark plugs (overworn), wires (crumbled and fell into the spark plug tube), a few hub caps, a lot of crumbling hoses, new O2 sensor, cleaned MAF sensor, air filter, upper coolant hose, fuel filter, etc for a total of around $200. It now runs with no CEL and pass smog very well.

However it still needs: air conditioing (R12, weak to be useless before the blower fan blew), blower fan / motor (not working at any speed, so likely not the resistor), windshield washer fluid reservoir (leaking), struts (bouncing around, ok for local driving but not at highway speed), driver side sun visor, a few light bulbs here and there, massive cleaning in the interior. There may be more to make it a "excellent" or even "good" condition cosmetically because it was parked outside the last 20 years, but it is reliable and starts every single time I need it to. Except that darn valve seats can drop any time and the ATF has never been changed.

At this moment it is a perfect city beater and it is probably something that most people wouldn't buy because of how beat up it is. It cost $250 to insure, $100 to register per year, and $50 to smog every other year. I have 3 other cars at home so I am not desperate to keep it as even a spare car (14 PriusV, 08 IS250, 97 Integra). I figure I could sell this Escort for around $1000, same as what BAAQMD pay me to crush, if it is fixed up. I could also just keep it at a strategically located places so I can use it as a warehouse or swap between big / small car or even take shuttle to work for free, or save it for another 13 years so I will drive it and my daughter take my 97 Integra by then.

What would you do if you were me?

I'd probably take the 1000$ bucks + all the associated car costs(yearly).

and profit

$1000 for a car you don't need? Get rid of it, no question.

I'm not sure if corrupted is the right word for it. I'm sure the auto makers are behind this trying to get rid of cheap cars, and people vote for it to make them feel good about "saving the world" as well as improving the curb appeal in their neighborhood.

Personally, I'd need an additional $250 to mentally be able to deal with the people and crackpots that a Craigslist "for sale" ad for it would draw, when trying to sell it that way.

So, that would be $1,250. Could you reasonably list it for $1,500 on Craigslist, and expect to get $1,250?

Or is the $1,000 offer a lot easier?

I only ask since I don't know what the SF car market looks like. Since it can pass smog, then you've got a bonus there.

Or just keep it and let it sit for the most part.

Lol I'm after reliability, and a Ford Escort doesn't quite make my list.

I'll have a Corolla or Camry in August or September, then it's bye bye VW.

Does the offer have an expiration date? If it's a standing offer, just keep driving the car for a while, and when you would rather have an extra $1K than the car, take them up on it.

Seems silly for them to go after old cars like that though.

I don't think you can sell 1993 Escort for more than $1000 on Craigslist after fixing all known problems, why not let the Bay Area AQMD pay you $1000 and don't worrying about dealing with Craigslist.

I would take the offer. Unless if you think you are taking that money from someone else (I presume the $1k plus crusher cost is paid for by your taxes). For the amount of work to sell it, plus all the issues it has now and might have later, and for the fact you have no real need for it, I think the answer is to take the money and run.

Now the city beater idea is nice. But just how much use does it reaaly get for that? Would that grand plus $350/year be better spent elsewhere?

Id put it on CL for $1250 or $1500, serious and cash only with proof of DL, insurance and citizenship. If it sells in a reasonable amount of time, pocket the extra money. If not, get the $1000 before the time runs out.

Meanwhile if it is registered and insured, drive it to save wear and tear on the other cars.

How many times can you do this? How many clunkers will they buy from you?
