First time oil change

Since I bought my truck used and I have no idea how it was treated so I am reading about how to maintain it.

I went to pep boys and bought puralator cabin air filter and oil filter and a reusable air filter made by the 400 mile company and I bought 5qt casterol Castrol EDGE 5w30 for my 2007 nissan frontier 4.0L V6. Does puralator make good filters? Did I get a good oil?

Depending on mileage, if I bought used truck and have no maint records I would change all fluids on it. Brake fluid, trans, engine oil, engine coolant, PS. That way I would have a baseline to move forward with on change intervals.

Castrol Edge is good oil. There will be endless debate on what is better, but lets not get off topic. Did you get a Purolator Classic oil filter or Pureone? Purolator makes good oil filters.

Have you ever changed the oil on a vehicle before or will this be the first time ever? If you are a newbie, then I would sugesst you have someone to show you how it's done. It will boost your confidence and ensure you get it done right.

Sometimes there are issues such as an overtightend filter that you cannot get off and you need experience on how to do it properly and quick.

I will have help doin this from somebody who knows what they are doin. I got the puralator classic. It has 106k miles. So I have to drain and refill all the fluids? I'm writing down all maintenance I do. I put what I did part number brand date and milage.

Puro filters are great middle-of-the-road stuff. IE slightly better than stock.

I don't know much about your reusable air filter though. It's important, the "dirt" in your engine usually comes in from the atmosphere, after all.

Purolator classic is a normal interval filter, castrol edge is an extended drain oil.

You might want to get a cheaper oil next time as you should keep the drains to severe service interval for 2-3 drains to make sure its nice and clean. Edge is good stuff though, no doubt.

What do you mean drain like fill it and flush it?

Do you have to replace the fuel filter too?

puro classics are good for normal conventional intervals... running an extended interval with synthetic is a stretch for that filter but it won't be a real issue... if you want to for a little peace of mind you could swap the filters halfway through the OCI...

You done good with what you bought. Do yourself a favor and get a copy of the owners manual and follow it. You'll get good advice from Pep Boys if you get an experienced salesperson.

Reminds me of when I was changing my oil on either the el Camino or the musstang and had to punch it with a screwdriver to get leverage because it was on so [censored] tight.

That's great that you are doing your first oil change!

Don'y worry - Castrol and Purolator are a great oil and filter combo. You will be doing good service for your truck.

Since this is the first oil change on a vehicle with an unknown service record, I would would recommend going 5,000 miles for this first oil change. Look at the color of the oil; if it is black in color stay with the 5k oil change interval. Otherwise, you could consider extending the length of your oil change. If you indeed look to extend your oil change past 5,000 miles, it would be worth considering picking up a Purolator PureOne or Fram ToughGuard. Filters such as these are designed for longer oil change intervals beyond 5,000 miles. (However don't sweat it with the Purolator Classic - that is a fantastic filter)

As others mentioned, it would be good to consider changing your brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and inspecting/changing your transmission fluid. All of these can make or break the life of your truck.

I'd also encourage you to look through Nissan's recommended maintenance schedule, so you can know what would be good to change when.
