We hit 1000 miles in our new Jetta quickly, and since this was a long weekend, today was the perfect day to change the oil.

The oil change procedure is quite easy on the 1.4 TSI. The worst part was removing the under body access panel which was very simple honestly, it’s just one more step. The panel is held up using Torx screws which I much prefer to the silly T tabs that my Honda uses which break all the time. The drain plug and oil filter were easily accessible once you get the panel off.

I used the OEM VW/Audi 508.00 0w20 oil and OEM German made oil filter Which I purchased from our VW dealer. Pricing was similar to what I paid for the Castrol 0w40 502.00 that I used in our previous Jetta so no worries there.

Once the factory fill was drained I looked at it in the pan under direct sunlight and to my surprise there were very few metal flakes in the oil. In fact, my Accord typically has more metal flakes in the oil than this factory fill did. Though this fill was only ran to 1000 miles. So that was a welcome surprise.

Now that we are out of the official break in period (1000 miles) we can drive it “normally”. This little motor really impresses. Getting up to speed is no issue whatsoever. We hope to have a good service life out of it. Oil changes moving forward will be 5000 miles max and will include a new oil filter with each change.

What a waste of perfectly good oil. No reason to do less than a 10k OCI on these VWs.

gregk24,

Good move! I think all BITOGers have seen enough UOAs to know that wear metals can be high for the first few OCIs before they trend downwards.
I do the first oil change somewhere between 500 and 2,000 miles. By the way on my '20 Accord - there nothing in the way of the drain plug and only a small easy to remove metal shield partially covering the oil filter.

BMW 2014 X1 s28i oil change at 4810 miles. I had free change coming, but did myself with Mobil 1 0w40, so I could send in factory oil sample. I'd say there was minimal metals, and could have run for total 10k miles.

I’ll be changing the fluids out in this baby early and often!

Good move! I go a step further and change oil out at 500 km (313 miles), 1,000 km (625 miles) and 1,500 km (938 miles) in a new engine. To each, their own I suppose. YMMV. :)

Good stuff! I will be changing my 2020 Camry around 3000 and then at 10000 with....you guessed it Mobil 1. Its always nervous and exciting at the same time doing the first oil change.

Did you consider Supertech? I just read a very long thread here that confirms Supertech is just as good as M1, especially with short OCI’s. I have been using M1 EP on my 2010 MDX but am thinking about Supertech for the MDX and my brand new Lexus ES 350.

Them 1.4L Turbos are perky motors and do get up to speed just fine.

I have thought about it. With my experience with Mobil 1 there is no reason to vary anything at this time. I get the M1 for $23 for 5 quart jug at WM.

There is alot of BITOG "money flush" that goes on here-due to hearsay and other reasons.....
OEM service intervals are usually fine for OEM engineered lifespans. If you are trying to make the unit last beyond the intended lifespan (like many on this site are), you may have to do more aggressive maintenance.

However, German vehicles have a long history of barely making it out of warranty, so yeah...

You are welcome to come by and pick up my used oil for re-use if you like.

There was a long-term study done on a city bus fleet that showed a strong correlation between engine longevity/health and multiple early oil changes when new. I wish I could find the study link again so I could quote it more accurately. So yes, you are wise to do at least one early oil change based on the evidence!

Interesting. I can't say I am shocked. We have all seen UOA's on factory fills and wear metals are usually high and trend down with time. For me it is just "cheap insurance" and worth the peace of mind the early oil change brings. Plus, I like tinkering on my cars!

Did you inspect the filter pleats? I would be curious to see what particles it caught. Maybe do another oil change early or maybe just a filter change in 2500 miles.

I did not which is probably a good thing. My mind always goes to worst case scenario!
