I was told by the dealer to bring it in at 5k, but I honestly think that is too long on the first oil change interval. Any suggestions?

I think that 3k is probably good, if the truck is warrantied though listen to whatever they say...unless you plan to do them all yourself I would just bring it back in at 5k

I typically do 1500-2000 on factory fill, but it depends on how long it sat on the lot. The next one I go 3-4K, then go by the book.

It was on the lot for less than a month. I think I'll go ahead and change it at 2,000 miles and then begin to increase OCIs from there. The only reason why I'd take it back to the dealer because the first oil change was going to be free at 5k miles.

New engines are designed better, have a superior high tech manufacturing process compared to the old days. Initial oil changes are not as important as they used to be. 5k is good.

i recently bought a new ram with the hemi. i changed the factory fill out at 2000, and changing it again at 5000. after that its normal 5-6k intervals for me. if it was mine i would do the same. change it yourself at 2k with a good conventional oil and ALWAYS a ford oil filter. then take it in at 5k and get your dealer services from then on. you get peace of mind and they get adequate records kept for your warranty.

What does the manual say? I'd follow what it says and not the dealer. Probably wait until the OLM trips off.

Change it whenever it makes you feel good to. On my cars, I do the first change at 2500, then at 5000. After that, usually 5K intervals.

I also have a brand new 2012 F150 5.0L. I did my first change last month at 2491 miles. At my rate of mileage, I'm good until next Spring.

I'm a big fan of flushing out the machining and break-in debris. I'll often OCI a piece of equipment in the first 10-20 hours (or mileage equivilant). After that, I just follow the normal OEM OCIs.

I did so with my 2010 Fusion at 1500 miles and did a used oil analysis, just to see what was in there; as expected, a lot of "stuff". The subsequent used oil analysis at 7.5k miles really dropped the metals. After that, at 30k miles, things were pretty darn normal.

I also have a 2012 F150 I changed mine at 2500 miles and it did have some break in debris in the oil. I am going 5k this time and see how it is. Do what ever make you fill good, Remember oil is cheaper then steel..
