What do you make of this? The 350Z is my daily driver and I want it to last a good long time. My goal is to find the right oil/filter combo to maximize longevity. Can I do better?
The oil filter for this sample was a Purolator Power Flow (cheap paper). Typically, I use M1 or Pure1 filters.
I've used Mobil 1 5w30 since about 6K miles, and I change it religiously every 3K.
Thanks for your advice,
Mika

Your report looks good. You are changing your oil too often. Get out of 1970s. Your TBN is strong and you can easily go 8,000-10,000 miles on this oil.

Do a search and you will find that the better oils German Castrol, Amsoil, Redline, and Mobil 1 are can be used for long drains.

Well you do have some fuel dilution bc of the lower flashpoint and viscosity is low. Next time get the engine thoroughly warmed up. Ideally you should have driven at least 10-20 miles just before the oil drain and sample. If you do a lot of short trip driving you need more.

And as mentioned..you are wasting valuable time and money by changine so frequently. There will be absolutely no benefit by changing at 3K miles vs 5K miles (minimum) with Mobil 1 (IMHO)

Ditto!

cpuld you send me your "used " oil I wouldn't hesitate to dump it in my car..my bypass would clean it up and LC would lower the insoulubles

GF-4 oils seem to be doing good so far.

It is encouraging, can't wait to see some longer intervals using this oil and the EP version. More evidence these new formulations can't be judged by a VOA.

Mika,

I have a G35 and we use the same VQ. It looks like M1 is good for this puppy but try a longer interval, perhaps 5K. If longer intervals make you uncomfortable, switch back to conventional oils; you'll be wasting money using synths with such short intervals.

I just switched from M1 to Pennzoil dino because my VQ didn't like M1 too much. But I'm pretty much an abberation, most VQs show better analysis results than mine.

Mika, I agree with the others here. This is a good report and you are on your way to keeping the motor running a good long while.

Synthetic's main two advantages over less expensive mineral-based oils are its ability to resist oxidation and keep flowing even after several thousand miles of use and their ability to flow in temperature extremes ... especially low temps.

So, I'd go at least 5,000-6,000 miles on Mobil 1 ... or switch to something like Pennzoil, Chevron or Schaeffer and continue your shorter drain intervals. Wear will be practically identical.
