Way to promote a safe environment Wally-fricken-World; punish those who attempt to do good and reward inaction. This guy probably prevented a rape and/or kidnapping. Maybe someone will offer this guy a job making more than the peanuts WM was paying him.

The biggest issue with that statement is that we've sold out any near-price competiton. K-marts around here have all closed and Targets all have limited merchandise in many areas. Ever look in their auto section? W-M has a place, for better or worse. Sure, the parking lot is filled with goons and streetwalkers at 9pm, let alone at 230am... so not sure why anyone would want to be there alone anyway... but obviously the store holds a purpose if the lady was shopping there at that time. Doubt many other options were open...

But youre right. While I can appreciate the issues associated with shoplifting or assaulting coworkers, this was full on assault of someone else on store property. The guy was helping because he was a bystander, oh his own time. I cannot imagine that the legal costs of allowing the woman to be beat up (which really is what they are considering - lawsuits, which is exactly why the let shoplifters leave, as an example) would be much different than stopping it.

I hope the woman and the fired employee both wring it out of WMs hide.

A real winner there.

But my favorite line, which I have no doubt was indeed true, is:

Quote:
When the charges first surfaced in April 2005, Coughlin claimed the money he embezzled was being used to pay bribes to trade union officials not to organize at Wal-Mart locations and to identify pro-union Wal-Mart workers

I changed links but my favorite part was when he was on house arrest and he attended a National Wild Turkey Federation fundraiser. Even though he was supposed to be in bad health. Big fat guy also.

What a load of baloney.

That article is dated 2005.

Coughlin pled guilty at the local u.s. courthouse to six felony counts - five counts of aiding and abetting wire fraud, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 1343 and 2; and one count of filing false tax returns, in violation of 26 U.S.C. § 7206(1). Not only did he steal from his employer, he stole from the taxpayers.

According to the Court, " ...Coughlin defrauded Wal-Mart by (1) directing that Wal-Mart employees' travel vouchers be falsely adjusted to request unwarranted reimbursements, which were then converted into cash and pocketed by Coughlin; (2) falsifying invoices so Wal-Mart paid Coughlin's personal expenses; (3) altering Wal-Mart employees' expense vouchers to include fictitious expenses, which were then converted into cash and pocketed by Coughlin; (4) using large quantities of Wal-Mart gift cards for personal use; and (5) looting audio equipment and cameras using Wal-Mart's Merchandise Transfer Report."

He got a sweetheart sentence, claiming he was in ill health, an unheard of downward departure of EIGHT levels, that so outraged the local feds that they appealed it and got it reversed.

More regarding Mr. Coughlin's misadventures can be found at United States v. Coughlin, No. 06-3294 (8th Cir. 08/28/2007), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. v. Coughlin, 255 S.W.3d 424, 369 Ark. 365 (Ark. 04/12/2007).
