Finally making the switch to Amsoil!!!

Ive always wanted to run Amsoil in my cars, but the price difference has always discouraged me. Now that PP and mobil 1 Full Synthetic have creeped up in price (I dont even know when or how that happened!) Amsoil is looking even more attractive.

Wife's car is a 2012 Corolla. It is spec'd for 0W20. Im planning on getting some Amsoil from Pablo (Fellow Bitog'er) in the next 2 weeks. Ive still got a stash of 5 gallons of 5W30 for my nissan versa, but once that is out, my versa is going on an Amsoil diet as well!

The spec' oil for your wife's Toyota is the TGMO 0W-20 which is a very light 20wt oil (HTHSV 2.6cP, VI 216). Unfortunately Amsoil doesn't make a light 20wt oil, therefore I'd stick with the Toyota 0W-20.

I'm suggesting using the Toyota 0W-20 at least until Amsoil comes out with a 20wt oil of the appropriate viscosity.
In the meantime, rest assured the Toyota 0W-20 is a great oil.

It really depends upon what you want to do.
If you want to reach for long drains, and do some used oil analysis along the way to establish how long the oil will last in your cars as you use them, AMSOIL Signature Series is a good choice.
If you intend to do the 5-6K drains most of us do, you may as well use SOPUS products and take advantage of their frequent MIR deals.
Note that both PP and Ultra show good long drain potential, but you really need to do used oil analysis to establish that in your cars as you use them, and at least one and probably both of your cars are still under warranty, so you will need to change per the OM in any event, unless you want to kiss the powertrain coverage goodbye.
You also don't tell us how many miles you're putting on these machines.
If you're doing 2K+ each month, a long drain plan makes sense.
If you do 1K or less each month, it makes less sense.
Just some random thoughts for you to consider.
If you really want to use Amsoil, do so.
It's quality oil, and dealing with someone like Pablo should be a lot more enjoyable than buying oil at Wally.

FDCG- The corolla is driven about 1500 miles/month, 50/50 city highway. My OCI is 5-6K always, and while I USED to do MIR on different oils, Ive given up on them. In the past year, ive not gotten 5 rebates back, its not even worth the hassle anymore.
PP and PU are great, but at the current prices, Amsoil is almost the same price. Never used Amsoil, so the novelty of it is also nice. Ill do a used oil analysis after the first run.

Caterham- Thats a very interesting point about Toyota 0W20 vs. everyone else. Im going to have to read up about that. Thanks for the tip!

I've never had a problem with MIRs, but if you'd rather not play, I understand.
Amsoil is good stuff, and we all want to try different oils, so why not?
You might check pricing on the Toy 0W-20.
This seems to be a very good oil, and you should be able to get case quanitites from a local Toy dealer pretty cheaply.
You might make some phone calls and check it out.

Don't let some of the guys talk you out of Amsoil. They even make statements that Amsoil doesn't make an oil that's the correct viscosity. Hilarious. They mean well, I guess. Sure Amsoil is not the thinnest SAE 20 made. Let me guess again, you live in Texas? Yep, Amsoil 0W-20 will not be too viscous.

Wow. I know people respect you, but you have yet to post any evidence that Amsoil SAE 20's are not really SAE 20. Appropriate viscosity? Before you post anything else, please post EXACTLY what the Toyota manual says. A scan is fine. Thanks.

I respect CATEHAM's input on this site greatly, but I do think he is out to lunch on his assessment of Amsoil 20-weights.

While I techincally 'understand' it, I don't think it is valid - cars that call for 0W-20 DON'T specifically call for an oil of '2.6 HT/HS, and no higher' - they want an oil that is 20wt. at temp, and meets the '0W' cold-cranking test, which Amsoil does. Just b/c it happens to do this with a slightly higher Ht/HS value is a minor point.....

Good choice. Your Corolla is under warranty so i would suggest not extending your oci's so therefore you'll not need the SSO. Use the XL or OE and change by the olm and you will be fine. I will second the notion that your OM specs an 0w-20 not a specific HTHS vis point so using Amsoil will be fine for your engine.

Agreed.

Amsoil ASM will perform JUST FINE in this Toyota. While ASM may give up a touch of MPG to the Toyota 0W-20, it will deliver superior extended drain performance in return.

I'm on both sides of the fence, if that's possible. If you want to extend you OCIs way out, do Amsoil. If not, go the other route.

Thanks for the help guys! While the viscosity issue is debatable (and I have no clue about it, it is way beyond my limited oil knowledge), it is something that I will be reading up on, nice and light sunday afternoon read!

I would imagine that the gas mileage difference between one brand's 0W-20 and another brand's 0W-20 might turn out to be the difference between getting stopped in a traffic jam for 5 minutes once vs. twice in a tankful of gas...

Or, maybe a strong headwind on a 200 mile trip on the highway?

What's next: whether Bosch sparkplugs with 4 tips give better gas mileage than ones with two?
