Finally drove a Gallardo on a race track

My parents bought me an Imagine Lifestyles Exotic Car Driving Experience as a birthday present. I chose the [base] Gallardo coupe from a great list of vehicles (F430, Vanquish, SLS, etc) and got to take it out to Autobahn Country Club's private race track.

The experience also included a quick intro to racing fundamentals course and time in the car with their professional. The track pro led us in an E63 pace car to make sure we all kept on a good racing line.

My street car is a pretty quick vehicle (0-60 in 5s flat) and I have even raced on this track before...but I was NOT prepared for this level of performance. The Gallardo's speed was staggering. Accelerating down the main straightaway was intense...35 up to 130mph, then back down to 35 again.

Everything about that car is "turned up to 11", so to speak. The noise, the acceleration, the handling, the braking...everything. The V10 sound behind my head is permanently burned into my skull. It is downright vulgar, and almost violent. The tranny just slams every gear, and the rev-matched downshifts are nearly instantaneous.

I don't even know what the limits of this car are. That's what's the most terrifying thing of all. I couldn't even get stability control to come on, despite hearing from them on the radio I had broken the 130mph barrier, something no one had managed all weekend.

Truly an experience to remember, and I will absolutely do it again next year. I may go for the F430 or SLS next time. So yes, mind = blown.

It was optional. I brought mine but knew I'd look like a doof being the only guy wearing one. And if I wreck at 130...probably not going to live anyways. ;-)

You're looking good in that mean Gallardo, save your lunch money to buy one.

The Gallardo in red or yellow is a cop magnet. I saw a red Gallardo stopped by CHP on Hwy 405 for going 2-3 MPH over the speed limit but slower than surrounding traffic.

Thanks for the pics. We need a vid!

Thousands on YouTube. Just put your speakers behind you and crank the volume up!

That may be the first Lamborghini since the Miura that truly strikes my optic nerves as a graceful, beautiful car. I loved the Countach, but it was hardly a thing of beauty. More like a bulldog. With a gland problem. And the Diablo had a few elements that just didn't work together to my eyes. But the Gallardo... just beautiful!

No love for the Aventador, huh? I think it looks pretty cool too, but I agree, Gallardo appears more graceful.

Seen it in person. Too obnoxious. It is definitely a Lamborghini but it is not graceful at all.

Nice to see one of those on the track, where they belong.

Yes, most are on the street as image vehicles, but they aren't really meant to be there - they are thinly-disguised race cars, meant to be driven as hard as you can.

Geeze, that thing looks mean in grey and black!

As my daughter would say in her 'Marcel the Shell' voice, "Compared to W-H-A-T???" A fireman's axe is not obnoxious compared to a Countach ;-)

Most Lamborghinis aren't. They tend toward brutal/obnoxious. I think that's one reason the Miura still holds up so well after 40+ years.

Ferrari F430 (previous day had the California I think)
Mercedes SLS AMG
Bentley Continental GT
Aston Martin Vanquish
Lamborghini Gallardo (coupe or spyder)

The headlights are also blacked out and the effect is more intense than i could ever dream.

Here is a gallardo running 10s on the 1/mi, maybe with brakes on.

That color combo is the nicest i have seen on a Gallardo and that car has been out since 2004 or 2005.

What year?

I love the pace car!

The track has a "performance fleet" they use for various events, pace cars, etc:

IS-F
E63
TT-S
S4
CTS-V
Cayman
370Z Nismo
C63
Super 7

If I recall correctly, the OP found a deal on Groupon where this day event was sold at like 70% off it's normal price. I checked out the Groupon site, I can't remember exact number but it was definitely a steal.

Wow, that must've been a blast. What tires do they run on these cars? Something stickier than stock must be quite the shock for anyone used to street tires. I've been tempted to ask a buddy in my club to try his Elise but I can't write the cheque to cover it, so I'd better not... He might say yes!
What's their policy on damages for these cars?
