I've heard that I can use one of two different filters for my truck (1990), besides the original non-bypass design.

Those choices are the ph3600 (wix 51516) which would be my preference if it will fit (it is .8 inches longer than the 51361/ph3682 (stock), or the ph3614 (wix 51348) which I know will fit but it is shorter and I will lose filter area.

I want to go to one of these for the extra protection that the bypass valve gives, so has anyone tried the bigger one (51516)? I just put a stock one on last month, so I won't be changing it just yet, just want the info.

I know some cars with the same engine have a little more room to play with, while I have a fender to think of.

Any experienced input would be appreciated!!! (by the way i will be using the wix/napa filter)

I've used the longer filter in the FWD applications. The ph3600 and its xreferences fit most older stanzas/maximas/sentras/altimas....
The motorcraft/premium purolater/STP/supertech/proline are probably great options for the money($2-4)).

Thw W1x #51348 will not physically fit into the space available for it on my truck. It's too large in diameter. Instead, I use the Wix #51034 which is a little skinnier and fits up into the space OK. The Fram PH3682 filter fits OK, but I stopped using them.
I called Wix factory and they said they never heard of this happening but without hesitation they told me the number of the #51034 filter as a substitute.
This is on a '97 Hardbody 4x2 which I still own.
Thanks.

About the bypass valve....
This 2.4L engine has the bypass valve built into the engine block so the filter does not need one. The Wix #51034 does NOT have a bypass valve. I don't really know for sure, but I suspect using a filter with a bypass valve would not hurt anything.
Thanks.

Yeah, but does the bypass valve in the engine work forever. I'd rather change it at every oil change and keep the one in the engine as insurance if the filter one fails.
