FilterMinders-Are they worth using?

They are standard on some of our fleet trucks.

An air filter lasts longer than most people think. And a minder means we change them when it's needed.
 
a filter minder costs less than an air filter and will probably save you from changing multiple air filters early throughout the life of the car. i think it's a good investment.

not to mention you aren't messing with the air filter more often than necessary and spilling dirt into the intake.
 
Definitely worth it. Saves filters, saves dirt ingression from too many new filters, etc.
Peace of mind. put it on and glance at it periodically.
 
what? Never heard of these? LOL....pics? Are we talking a "computer esque" 'minder? Similar to that of an oil life monitor? :P

Shouldn't the engine know when it's being "restricted" by say, dirt.....dust, etc.?

Dually, I think you got your answer.

Consider this also. It comes from an engineer who works in the air filter industry:

"Ninety percent of the dirt ingested by the engine during the filter element's life comes in the first 10 percent of use."

People who change filters too often are letting more dirt into their engines than those who run them longer because filter efficiency improves with use. It gets better and better but at some point, restriction begins to take a bite out of the power output. The restriction gauge allows you to determine the EXACTLY CORRECT moment for a filter change according to the operating environment of the vehicle, whether that. sin 2K miles and six days, or 5 years and 90K miles.
 
I think that air filter restriction gauge(AFRG) should be standard equipment in all engine. Of the two AFRG and TPMS, AFRG is much more useful.
 
I'm going to talk to a mechanic friend about them (I think that they are great).

Could do a simple photocopy attached to the invoice, explaining that they will know when to get the filter changed, rather than a standard 5-10k $20+labour.
 
I have looked at these threads with interest, such things are not common, perhaps they Are in heavy haulage or other commercial environs.

But they would certainly ensure the full life of an air filter is used.

I may have a look under the bonnet of my cars to see if there is room to fit one.
 
Yeah, DP between manifold pressure and absolute atmospheric (though they read gauge pressure only). They are essentially a recording vacuum gauge.
 
It would work on a diesel because it has no throttle but not on a gasser. The MAP reads below the throttle and the throttle would skew the readings. In fact, you can't use a restriction gauge at all on carbureted engines because the operation of the choke will skew the readings... so I was told.

Max restriction is decided on an individual basis according to the engine. I have seen some diesels as high as 30 inches. Generically, many sources list diesels at 25 inches of water and gassers at 15 inches. Ron Kelderman at Filterminder thinks that for maximum FE, diesels should be limited to 20 inches.
 
For me they are definitely worth it. I have one real life example on my site with one of my delivery vans.
First OEM filter: 12 months, 23,900 km
Second OEM filter: 7 months, 15,500 km
Third OEM filter: 17 months, 38,500 km
Current OEM filter has about 20,000 km on it in about 10 months

It depends on the humidity, dust, smoke, and where it goes for deliveries. first filter came on it, next three wer bought at the dealer for about $40 each.

What interval would I have used if not for the sensor?
