I've been fortunate enough to have gone in my past vehicles without having to use a filter wrench (cars did have canister style twist on filters).

Now with the new Prius: the filter is very straight forward & easy to get to but I have not the slightest clue what Filter Wrench to get or brand.

Belt type or crush type?

Appreciate all opinions.

I either buy the crushed type that slip over the filter-end ... or I buy the one that custom fits the filter bottom & uses a socket wrench for removal/installation.

I have two sale topics in the "Items For Sale" forum-room here at BITOG.

This is my favourite kind right here. It swivels at the handle so you can get into tight places. It's made by KD Tools USA and comes in 4 sizes to fit all filters.

I have many filter wrenches, but the most all around flexible one is a band type which attaches to a 3/8" drive socket extension. With my various 3/8" drive extensions, handles and u-joint it gets in almost anywhere. Here is an example of one from K-D:

Here's another great wrench made by Lisle Corp USA. It works with 3/8 inch drive tools to get you in anywhere. As you turn left with your ratchet, the jaws move in with massive force and breaks the filter free. It comes in 2 sizes to fit all filters.

Often the wrench selection has to be tailored to fit the space available.

Sometimes a slip joint plier works fine and then you have a tool for other uses.

.... if you are working on only one car and the filters have a fluted top and you have easy access to the top then the custom end-cap type works great. As someone else said, by all means get a quality tool from KD, Lisle or another good maker and not a flimsy dollar store Chinese thing! Here is a picture of one of KD's end cap types:

If you don't let the Jiffy-Stop-Lube-Monkeys work on your car you should be able to get it by hand with the assistance of a nitrile glove.

That's exactly how I get my filter off the '00 cavalier sometimes. When I don't wish to get oil down my arm which is most of the time.

A tip I read on BITOG a while ago and used when I couldn't get a filter off by hand - sandpaper! Gave me the extra grip I needed. Most of the cars I work on are FWD 4cyl and its a complete pain to get a filter wrench in there. But as long as I was the one who did the last oil change, its not needed.

I'll vouch for the pain to get a wrench in there. I can't even use my plier style wrench on my car I have now. It barely fit my old Nissan Altima. It fits my mom's Malibu fine though.

On a side note, I tried out my new Lisle 63600 on all of my filters in my stash, and it's too big for the Honda A01 Filtech, and too small for the Napa Gold 1334. So much for it being import friendly

But it works with the other Champion and Purolator filters I have, so that's a plus. I might have to invest in getting the next size up for the Napa Golds.
