Hello,
What is the brand and part number for a low profile cap wrench for a Fram PH3387A oil filter? The vehicle is a 3rd Generation Cavalier with a 2.2L Vin 4 (non Ecotec), and has a 3 speed automatic. There is literally just enough room to get the cap wrench on, and still have enough room for the tip of the ratchet to engage it. As everyone probably knows, this filter is a nightmare to access on these vehicles. Has anyone had luck with a particular cap wrench for this application? It seems like all the videos claim you can remove it by hand, and don't mention a cap wrench.
Thanks

This isn't A.I. That's in your browser 🤓😆

I had a Mazda Protege' that was near impossible, back of engine under the intake.

I would go to an autoparts store that carries the cap wrenches and grab the fram filter from out the box and see which one fits tight. may be that none fit good enough.

I have a three-jaw wrench for taking off some pesky filters, but this doesn't work 100% of the time. Maybe plastidipping the fingers may help it get some stiction.

We're not a search engine buddy. It'd be a miracle if someone knew an exact brand and part number to post.

I've noted that a lot of cap wrenches will only fit one specific filter and fit sloppily on others even if the flute count is the same until that filter gets updated and now it hardly fits anymore. Go to advance auto and find a carquest premium that fits it and try to find a cap wrench there and test fit it. If it fits nicely then buy a half dozen filters and store them in the closet since the heat and humidity of the garage isn't great for them over the years and if you know the engine is clean you could run the filter for 10k miles just change the oil sooner but leave the filter on there for another run or two.

If that fails your only option is to get a KN filter with a nut on the bottom

Had a 98 and 01 Cavalier with the same engine. On a cold engine, I could easily go top down with a standard oil filter metal band swivel wrench and get the filter off. Granted, it is by blind feel but once you figure it out, easy peasy from then on.

Thank you, Hootbro, for the suggestion about the band wrench with a swivel. They make small versions with the minimum band diameter that is just under the O.D. of the PH3387A. I agree that the best way is down through the top. The old OEM tool brand cap wrenches (among others) were perfect, since they had the drive plate welded under the cap which made for a very compact unit. Of course those are only available online now, which makes it hard to test fit! Even in the stores, cap wrenches are becoming scarce with all the cartridge filters now out there.
