how are you guys removing the filter seal on GM truck and cars ? that little seal that goes up into the trans case is tough. i know how i do it, but was wondering if there is a better way ?
Do you mean the transmission filter neck seal? Those have a tough inner metal core surrounded by plastic that takes quite a bit of force to distort. I pried out the last one with a combination of a dental pick and small screw driver. The pick to grab and distort it. Then some needle nose pliers to grab it and pull it out. I don't know of a better way...only did it once.
Be careful with the screw driver as it can easily score the wall and you won't even know until the seal pops out. Then you'll spend a while with fine sand paper trying to smooth things out.
Looks like the pros don't usually change it. Mine was original from the factory at 14 years old and 70K miles. I figured it would be the only time I'd do the filter. If I knew what a pain it was to get the seal out I'd have probably just left it in as long as it looked good...and it did. But I would add that when it came out, it did so in little bits of soft "rubber" shreds...or what used to be a hard plastic-like material.
Well we have somewhere around 60 Chevy trucks. We change the seal every time. I like to use a blunted hook style pick it pulls them right out, no damage. To put it back in I have a nice offset small deadblow. These things see service all the time and when I used to do that it was nice n easy.
