filter number "3682" and Nissan trucks..

Filter number "3682" is the current number that The filter xref books call for my Nissan truck(1989 4 cyl) for Frams/Champion clones. Years ago those books called for the Fram PH43 or the AC PF-20. For a short time they called for the Fram PH16". The "43"/"16" is larger, the 3682 is a smaller, more generic sized filter that fits more models..
I use the Motorcraft FL300 now (crossref for the 43.....) which does have an internal bypass.
That 43 and 16 filters do have an internal bypass in it.. the 3682 does not..
I believe the Nissan dealer is still listing the correct filter (has an internal bypass).

I am wondering if anyone knows why those xref books are now calling for a filter that does not have a bypass to use in place of a filter that does have a bypass. My Nissan truck did not just grow a filter mount bypass like the Chevy's use. I bought it new in 89, nothing has changed on it since then.
I am wondering how many people have used this 3682 filter in applications that previously required a filter with an internal bypass..and maybe had internal filter self-destruction and never knew it??

If Lubeowner is reading this, do you see vehicles using this filter? ever see any destructed filters of this number?

I have asked the Fram tech dept a couple times why they list that filter number now as opposed to the older xfrefs and I have not had an answer back.
Anybody have any answers to this stuff?

All Nissan trucks that have either the Z22, Z24, Z24S, Z24I, KA24E, or KA24DE engines have a block mounted bypass just like the Chevys do. You can use (and I have done so as well) a filter with a built in bypass valve, but it's not necessary.
 
Really! That is interesting! That would explain why there is no rash of articles about the newer 3682 filters causing any problems...
I think it is odd that they always spec'd a bypass filter (until recently anyway) for an engine that already included a bypass in the mount...but I guess that is just a back-up to a back-up so-to-speak. Great! Thanks for the info!

BTW, I just called my local Nissan Stealership, the service dept just told me that the engine does NOT have a bypass. I'd have to think that it does though otherwise there would have to be issues with folks using that 3682 filter on that engine...maybe that's why I don't get work done there

Who at the stealership told you this? The parts guy who's been there all of 3 weeks, or the tech who worked at a Dodge stealership for 15 years before coming to work for Nissan a month ago? I, and you should also, take what the stealerships say with a grain of salt, and I work for one (not Nissan though).
 
The service dept fellow that I just asked (this is the 2nd call..) said he didn't know for sure one way or the other. Who knows how long he's been there. He just said that sometimes the mfgr will make changes over time when they determine that something is no longer needed...sounds to me like he just didn't know and didn't want to spend any time investigating it.
What you said earlier makes sense, that engine must have had a built-in bypass all along and the older x-ref filters just had the backup by-pass...and nobody ever knew any difference. The new smaller/generic sized filter (3682) must be sufficient enough to at least not cause any dead engines...I'm glad I've always used the larger filters though..
 
3600-sized is my choice for these 3/4" threaded Nissans.

The 3682 was the common sized filter for many older Nissan vehicles.

Since some of these engines had normal startup clatter, I'd doubt if they had a 'working' filter bypass.

The start-up clatter you refer to (at least on the KA24E engined trucks) was caused by a broken plastic timing chain guide that allowed the chain to contact the timing cover before the timing tensioner was fully pumped-up. This noise has absolutely nothing to do with the built-in bypass, or the design of oil filter used.

This "guide" problem is well documented on several Nissan forums, and Nissan even released a countermeasure chain guide you could install that would correct the problem. Most people live with the noise as replacing the chain/guides on these engines is an expensive, labor intense operation.
 
Just went to Advance Auto and got a Maxlife VF3600 filter with the moneyback rebate..
I'll use it next, then di-sect it and see how it compares to the fl-300. It has a silicone adbv just like the fl400s, has a bypass, and is bigger (outside at least) than the 3682...looks better in every respect so far.

The 3682 is commonly used on many that I see in the shop. That was our old number when we used Mighty. I believe our Warner books spec. a Ph253 (4670) for some of these apps. or a PH2827 which is the same as a 3682. We see lots with the clatter on start up, man it sounds bad. I think I have even seen a few with the small PH2835 (small Chrysler)filter on there, I believe Fram specs. this out but not sure.

I don't think that I have cut many 3682's open yet, but I don't recall any failures. We really don't get a lot of vehicles that take that filter, just a few Nissan trucks and old Subaru's.
