Filter Life - 2 years OK for infrequently used engines??

I'm curious as to the practical life of an oil filter in vehicles that aren't driven very often such as collector cars.

I assume filter life is a function of miles driven. i.e. heat and volume of flow vs. time.

If a vehicle is driven once or twice a month, year, is the oil filter good for several years?? What would degrade from sitting??

I change oil annually on collector cars but wondering if changing the filter could be done every other year.

In my TR3 which only get used a few times a year I try to change it every 2 years. It is always clean so I think the filter could probably go more than that. The oil itself I think 1 year should be max but I sometimes go 2 years as it is still clean looking.

Sure. I've done the same thing for years. No problems at all as long as when you run it you run it long enough to get the oil good and hot for at least 15-30 minutes, IMHO.

Personally, I wouldntworry about a good oil being int here 2 years, but I would worry about a cellulose/paper media starting to decompose, and the glues used in there starting to as well. Id rather change the filter once a year, top ff the oil a bit, which cant hurt, then change the whole oil every 2-3 years.

I remember reading on this board that someone contacted mobil and they said that they're oil should only be used for 1 year after opening.


I'd have the same issues stated above with the filter. The ADBV may get hard as well.


If I were you, I would still change this oil once a year.

edit (I mean filter as well as oil with an oil change)

I agree. If these are real nice collector cars, I would still change the oil/filter once a year regardless of milage.
