I only put about 2.5k miles per year on my car, as it is only driven 12 weeks in the summer and 5 weeks in the winter. I still change the oil once a year just cuz I don't like leaving it in there for over a year, but I was wondering, could I leave the filter there? I use the mityvac to change my oil so I'd like to cut corners and not change the oil filter for 2 years, since i'd need to jack the car up in order to change it. Also, I'm using a Purolator Premium Plus for what it's worth. Any advice appreciated, thanks!

Hard to say, Chuck. By your description, you put on 2500 miles in 17 weeks ...or about 150/week. Assuming that the trip length is about 15 miles one way (or at least 10) ..I'd say that you're purging your moisture. Your climate would tend to shorten your fuel enrichment cycle by a bit ..even in what you call winter. I'd be interested in seeing what the filter looks like when cut open.

In any event, with the mileage you're accumulating, time will kill anything to a greater degree than operational insult, imo. Your dry climate (most of the time, except for the Yahoo!! celebrated rain event) will retard the effects of the open valves over extended periods somewhat. That is, even if the wear is accelerated, it will probably be no more than a daily driver of the same age. I'm uncertain if I'd recommend a periodic starting of the engine to refresh the cylinder oil film. The fuel enrichment may exacerbate the static rust formation .. I dunno

..I'd recommend using a fogging oil for the off season lay up of your engine. Here's one that I (cough-cough) recommend

Hey Gary thanks for the advice, you're always a good help. I forgot to mention a couple things:
1) The car is stored/driven in Massachusetts, AZ is just where I go to college.
2) When I'm not home the car is driven once a month to keep things lubricated.

Again, thanks for the help!
